University professor develops automatic tattoo recognition system for police

East Lansing (MI) – A Michigan State University professor has developed an automatic tattoo recognition program that can help police identify criminals and victims.  The aptly named Tattoo-ID system was made by computer science and engineering professor Anil Jain and will recognize scars, marks and tattoos.

Jain claims the system helps police because gang members often have several tattoos and that many gangs have a unique tattoo (kinda helpful to police don’t you think).  The professor also says tattoos are a more accurate means of identification for bodies because the ink is deeply embedded into the skin and decomposes slower.
