Chicago (IL) – It was clear yesterday that Mozilla is likely to achieve its goal to become part of the book of Guinness World Records with the most downloaded software within 24 hours. The download pace has slowed considerably on day 2, but allowed the company to cross the 10 million mark in less than 48 hours.

Even before Firefox was unveiled on Tuesday, Mozilla’s servers were mostly unreachable. It turned out to be a minor hiccup for the organization’s Download Day campaign, which resulted, according to our observations, in about 7.5 to 7.7 million downloads within the first 24 hours the browser became available on Mozilla’s FTP server. The HTTP count started a bit later and lasted a bit longer and ended up, according to Mozilla, at about 8 million downloads, which should be enough for the browser to claim its world record. It will take about a week until the numbers will be officially confirmed.

That’s more Firefox downloads than we’ve ever had in a single day - an impressive feat indeed! Please be patient while the good people of Guinness review our World Record attempt. This might take a few days so please check back here. And, a huge thanks for all of your support," wrote Mozilla on its Firefox Download page.

Over 3.43 million downloads came from the US, but other countries also contributed, such as Canada (313,000), China (247,000), Russia (144,000), France (391,000), Spain (400,000), Iran (268,000), India (132,000), Italy (330,000) and almost a million from Germany.

Downloads crossed the 10 million mark on day 2 and stood at 11.7 million after 48 hours.
 
To promote Firefox 3, Mozilla has created Download Day campaign designed to persuade users to download Firefox 3 the same day as it ships in an effort to set the Guinness World Record as the most downloaded software in 24 hours.

I'm glad to see Firefox 3 is a success. Of course we don't truly know how many "users" that 10 million represents. I've downloaded Firefox 3 for both my home computer and my work laptop. I'm sure others are doing the same. Therefore, even though they may have that many downloads it still doesn't really tell use how many users they have.

Hey First off, it's not official yet. The Guinness people have to review the download logs and then announce the real number. Secondly, if downloads are from the same computer, only one of them is counted as valid. Even failed downloads were not considered for this record so, you tell me! Last but not least, IE sucks! Sorry for the language.

On my computer Firefox is slower than IE7 and much slower than Safari.. XP Pro SP2 all updates. Standard config for all of them.

When I said I downloaded Firefox on my home and laptop computers I downloaded it on my home computer from home (1 ip) and on my work laptop from work(another 1 ip). I know others in my office who also use firefox even though it's not officially supported. It's probably a lot of other folks are doing the same downloading it at home and work. Also I've been a Mozilla users since well before v1.0 so IE isn't something I've used as my main browser in years.

So how does FireFox make money? 2003 $2.4M 2004 $5.8M 2005 $52.9M 2006 $67.0M Mozilla is not strapped for cache. Everytime you use the built in search bar, or the search from the firefox home page, google/yahoo/etc know about it and firefox gets paid for referrals. It is just you. I have installed Firefox 3 on a huge variation of machines, from p2 PC's to Core 2 Duo PC's, OS 9 machines, OSX machines, Linux. And it is faster on every one.

firefox is just a dumbed down version of SeaMonkey's Navigator (so that retards won't get scared by "too many features"), plus lots of bugs and memory leaks I guess someday when I'm bored I'll give firefox one more chance and try version 3 to see if it finally reached a decent level..

I used firefox 2 and was never impressed compared to IE 7. Version 3 is a huge difference. It runs much faster than IE7. I can confidently say that firefox has finally matured.

I've downloaded FF3. I have to say this product was way too hyped up. Everything seems to be great, as long as I don't run into the memory leaking(FF2). I still enjoy IE 7. It runs faster and has a smaller footprint. But I can still see myself using both. I just hope that nasty memory leak doesn't show its head.
