Philadelphia (PA) – Millions of people like using Craigslist to find their next apartment or rental home, but now the ever pervasive Nigerian scammers are putting up fake ads to relieve unsuspecting victims of thousands of dollars. Here’s how the scam works, you think you’re looking at a legitimate rental ad. The pictures look great, the neighborhood is good and maybe most importantly the price is right. Maybe you even drove by the place and the online pics match what you see in real life.
But when you send the first month’s rent and deposit, you’re actually sending it to someone in Nigeria. NBC10 reports that scammers are copying real estate ads and then reposting them onto Craigslists with their own contact info. So in essence, you’re actually trying to rent from someone who doesn’t own the property. Furthermore, victims have even been asked to fill out a credit application (gotta make sure the tenants can pay rent right?) which opens them to even more fraud. The real owners of the property often have no clue about the fake Craigslist ads. Read more … NBC10.com.
