The band has a long, storied history of clashing with fans online, but along with its label, it hopes to make amends with a new website called Mission: Metallica, offering fans a chance to "experience the new album before it's done" that will offer its upcoming album in the unprotected MP3 format -- no digital rights management attached. When the two-years-in-the-making album is finally ready to be released, members of the site will be able to download it in the DRM-free MP3 format - quite a big step for the band that sued the original Napster.

It's been proven that bands make more money from sales of tickets, t-shirts, etc... then they do with the sales of the songs. I use to be a big Metallica fan but now they don't get anything from me even my time listening to them. And I am not the only one I know of that has done this. So they pretty much shoot them selfs in the foot by doing this even the RIAA is backing off and in some cases reversing their stance on MP3's.

Xier, STFU. Just because companies/bands are finally having a change of heart towards DRM doesn't mean they are copying each other. Which by the way, is one of the worst analogies I've ever heard. If you do something good after seeing someone else do it, that doesn't mean you're copying it and/or are a poser. St.Anger was horrible, I'll admit. But that said, many people (including myself) are looking forward to their next album. Go back to listening to 2Pac/whatever.

pretty sure radiohead already did it if you wanna start the "they did this first thing" and limp bizkit supported napster (including a free concert) back when they were still on the radio. besides this isn't a bad thing, moving away from RIAA greed is better.

As far as I'm concerned the last Metallica album was ...And Justice For All. That was their absolute peak. That intro to Blackened still makes me want to break things. Harvester Of Sorrow too. Ah the good ole days.
