Zagreb (Croatia) – Two screenshots posted to a popular Internet forum claim to show two upcoming Nvidia graphics cards: The 9900GTX and 9900 GTS, based on the GT200 chip.




If you have been waiting for more details about Nvidia’s next-gen products, then this is likely the juiciest information yet. The poster of the thread on Xtreme Systems claims that the screenhots show the upcoming "D10U" products, one board codenamed P651 and the other P65x. If these pictures display an engineering drawing of the actual product, then we now know that both the GTX and GTS versions have support for triple-SLI. This featurerequires one 8-pin power connector to work, translating into a maximum power consumption of 225 watts for the 9900 GTS (75 watts + 150 watts). According to these drawings, the 9900 GTX could be looking at up 300 watts (75 watts + 75 watts + 150 watts). Of course, we don’t expect either card to actually consume quite so much, but we believe that the engineers have created enough headroom simply to ensure a stable operation of the card.

An 8-pin PCIe power connector can deliver 12.5 Amps at 12V, which ends up at 150 watts. A 6-pin PCIe connector can deliver 6.25 Amps at 12V, or 75 watts.

Looking at the drawing from another angle, we see that there are subtle differences between the two parts, but some things just do not add up. There are eight memory chips on front, and possible eight memory chips on the back, which would confirm the rumored 512-bit memory controller. Possible memory sizes are 512 MB, 1024 MB  and 2048 MB. But the alleged 9900 GTS features eight memory chips as well, so the rumors of a 448-bit memory controller and 896 MB of memory would be incorrect. Or are they true and these pictures are a dud?

What looks rather strange is the presence of NVIO chip. After the "we do not support HDCP at 2560x1600" fiasco, would indicate that these pictures are fake.

NordicHardware ran two stories (here and here) disclosing alleged details of the cards. Reading over those details, we would agree that these pictures fit the bill, at least as far as power consumption and most specs go.  

Your guess is as good as ours. It is an interesting topic for weekend discussions on forums around the Internet. And in our comments section, of course.

We can see 8 memory chips on the front of the GTS, and assuming there are only 6 more on the back, that makes up for a total of 14 chips, matching the right bus width of 448 bits, and capacity of 896 MB.

Hi Alekxo, actually, wiring dictate the number of chips, not PCB itself. If graphics cards feature memory on the back, you can bet it's the same amount as in the front. Take a look at 8800GTS 320MB and 640MB, you can see that both cards had identical number of memory slots, but the 320MB version came with half of the chips. Theo

Hi Adam, actually, it's not weird at all... you have groups of either 32-bit or 64-bit (2x64 and 4x32 were common at the dawn of GPU computing, like GeForce 2 and GeForce 2 MX). Nowadays, memory is 64-bit, so if you go and play around with 64-bit chunks, you get odd numbers - G80 or 8800GTX was 512-128=384, while 8800GTS was 512-192=320. Those 128-bit chunks were actually 2x64, while 192-bits were 64 64 64. If nV NV60 has 512-bit bus, you can play around to get fully-fledged 512-bit, chips that fail qualification go down to 448-bit (512-64). it is even possible to go down to 384-bit, or the original G80 count. But biggest challenge that any company has is "marriage", to borrow the term from automotive industry. how will GPU with 1500 pins work with organic substrate and how will that substrate work with the PCB? That is the biggest challenge of them all... we'll see soon enough :-D Theo

I can see another near worthless piddling out, as they jerk around and scrounge endless $$$$$ as millions of PC gamers have nowhere to go for hundreds and hundreds of dollars... Yes,we know it's supposed to finally be an entire rework, but if it is, do we look forward to real fps improvements, or just a pee piddle dee diddle minimum to get enough bandwagon sales ? Then if it's a trickle crapper as usual, they will retrickle 5 times more over 3 years plus. I'm so SICK of it. Remember when ATI released their 2900 and some of their cards could be flashed with the 512bit TXT XXX superwhomper bios - and be immediately 2x as fast, and still today as fast as the 8800 GTX 768mb, within a hiar... well those cards suddenly disappeared and were PULLED... See, they keep ****-i-n-g- all of us, holding back...cutting this and that tracer, crippling down the bios, slicing half the lanes, chopping off half the mem bandwidth... Then after all that crippling, they sell the disabled cards at high prices, and the uncrippled FEW at extraordinary $$$$$$$$ - when all the 95% crippled cards could be 5-10 times better anyway. SCREW whatever they are doing, it will be a chopped down crippled wooden legged piece of crap in 15 diferent versions, then if you are a standing hundred thousandaire, you'll get a couple of the top cards that can almost but not quite play the games released two years ago sufficiently, spending three times what the average consumer spends on their entire PC. SCREW em I hate them and their corporate "market segment strategies".
