Tokyo (Japan) – There is a slight chance that we may be running out of appropriate terms to describe next generation of high-resolution displays. Following high definitions, high(er) definition (briefly used by Sony), Quad HDTV, 4K and 8K, JVC now claims to have the first “Super Hi-Vision” device that can display 35 megapixels, roughly 17 times the resolution achieved by today’s full HD, 1080p screens.

The manufacturer said that it has added a new LCOS-based D-ILA (Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier) high-definition reflective liquid crystal device for projectors that is described to enable the display the highest resolution images and videos shown to date. Following the 7.86 megapixel 4K2K (3840 x 2048 pixels) D-ILA device that was released in 2003 (and upgraded to 4096x2400 pixels in 2007), there is now a 8K4K D-ILA projector model with a resolution of 8192 x 4320 pixels.

A new production process and new pixel structure for finer pixels enabled to develop the new 1.75” D-ILA. The device has a 50% higher density in its ratio of area per pixel as compared to the 1.27” 4K2K D-ILA device.

You don’t have to start counting your dollars just yet, as projectors based on these devices are not only expensive, but are also several years away from the consumer market. The company currently sells the 1080p DLA-HD1 projector based on a 0.7” 2K1K D-ILA device that achieves a native contrast ratio of 15,000:1  for a about $4600. The DLA-HD100 offers a 30,000:1 contrast ratio and sells for about $6000.

There is also the professional DLA-SH4K, which runs on the updated 4096x2400 pixel 4K2K D-ILA with a 10 megapixel resolution. The price: 150 million Japanese Yen, or about $142,500.
