New York (NY) - In previous generations of video gaming, when a new title was released on multiple platforms there was rarely much discussion over which version to get. If you were a PS2 fan, you should go ahead and get the PS2 version, etc.
However, with widely varying online services, different display and rendering technologies, and differentiated control schemes, multiplatform games are posing more of a debate, and Grand Theft Auto IV is showing that right out of the gate.
As gamers around the country begin their new virtual life of crime and thuggery, the PS3 version of GTA IV has shown some problems not present with the Xbox 360.
As with every online game released on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, there is a substantive argument that the PS3 online community is just no where near that of the Xbox 360. There are more registered Xbox Live users than there are sold PS3 consoles.
However, with GTA IV, some gamers are experiencing complete online outages. There was a problem with the PS3 servers causing the online mode of the game to be shut down. Sony told Kotaku that it was aware of the problem and was "looking into it."
Additionally, despite the PS3's calling card as the console for HD gaming, the PS3 version of GTA IV is only presented in 630p compared to the Xbox 360's 720p support.
The counter-argument, though, is that the PS3 offers 100% free online gaming. Microsoft requires users to pay for its premium Xbox Live Gold service to access any online multiplayer features. Meanwhile, the Wii has very limited online access and does not have some of the same basic capabilities as the other consoles, such as downloadable content and a universal friends/contact list.
