Los Angeles (CA) – A former UCAL Medical Center employee has been indicted for allegedly illegally accessing the computerized medical records of celebrities. The indictment was handed down by the United States District Court and claims 49-year-old Lawanda Jackson, a former administrative assistant, accessed records and sold the information to news outlets.
The government claims Jackson received approximately $4600 from a national news outlet for selling information on up to 60 unidentified celebrities. The indictment does not name the outlet or celebrities, but the Los Angeles Times has learned that Jackson viewed the records of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, his wife Maria Shriver and Farrah Fawcett. You would think that such information would fetch a higher price. The Times also claims she sold the information to the National Enquirer and that the tabloid hid the transactions by writing checks to Jackson's husband. Jackson left the UCLA Medical Center in May 2007. The UCLA Medical Center is obviously the hospital of choice for many famous people because of its location in Los Angeles. The hospital recently fired more than a dozen employees for illegally accessing patient information including the records of pop singer Britany Spears. Jackson will be arraigned on June 9 2008 and faces up to 10 years in Federal prison.
