Kyoto (Japan) - Nintendo reported its fourth quarter results today, surpassing expectations as it reached nearly a billion dollars.  The Japan-based video game giant reported a net profit of 93.2 billion yen ($900 million) in the Jauary - March period.

During Nintendo's fiscal year, which runs from March to March, it achieved profits of over 257.34 billion yen ($2.5 billion), a new company record.

Over the last 12 months Nintendo sold more than 18.6 million Wii units worldwide as well as over 30.3 million DS handhelds.  Lifetime Wii sales total 24.45 million units, it said.

Unbelievably, the Wii remains elusive in most retail stores.  To combat this problem, Nintendo said it will ramp up its production to make 2.4 million units per month by this summer.  It currently produces a monthly amount of 1.8 million.  

"Nintendo's strategy is to accelerate the current sales momentum from 'must-have for every family' to 'must-have for everyone' by continuously introducing new and unique software and introducing new services which take advantage of its expanded installed base," said Nintendo in its financial report.

The Japanese releases of Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros Brawl were huge booms for Nintendo.  The US release of Brawl was also a success, although it came out at the tail end of the fiscal year.  Wii Fit is coming out to the US in May.

I have no idea how such a crap system sells so well. No self respecting gamer I know can play this for more then 15 min at a time. Unless your playing with your ... girlfriend, kids, mother.

HD gaming aside, there is no denying Nintendo grabbed the gaming industry by the scruff of the neck and reinvented their own wheel. What is there not to like about the Wii? Cry more.

I wasn't really betting on Nintendo's words when they said there was such a huge potential market of casual gamers, and that the Wii would succeed at filling such gap. Maybe it's because I never believe in self promotion, but you have to admit they were right. A whopping 18.6 million times right in the last 12 months, not including shortages. Shortages, even with the X360 and PS3 on it's trail. I personally don't feel interested in the console, but what a toy they've made! Nintendo deserves the multi-billion dollar profit pat on the back!

I have the wii concole and had been quite disappointed in it so far. Other than all the great games from Nintindo themselves like those Mario related stuff, there is a really lacking of any good thrid party games at all. All the games have really low end graphic and childish scheme and the worst is that they make the good series like drangon quest into a short version for non-gamers and changed all controls/action to fit the wii remote and make it almost not playable. Problem is a lot of the games were not really designed for the wii remote and they change it so that you will have to use it... so the moving is not on the nut-chunk but on the cross bar on the wii remote and with trigger button... while menu is on the A button way under your thumb... so when you are navigating you can't switch your thumb back to press other button because it's way below....it's just stupid. I mean I don't want more wii games like cooking mama.... :)

but all they play is mario related nintendo games that are similar to previous game cube's game of the same name. There is no inventions here..just sequels. And most seniors are still stuck on the wii sport that comes free. And girls stuck on the hana motania crab and barbie crab and cooking mama type of junk. no series games are in the making. all 3rd party games are junk. IMO becuase most well regarded developers do not want to lower there standard to make cappy games for a crappy platform...plus wii was never in their plan when they schedule for products(they don't code a game in weeks).... and even if they are going to make some for wii... they have to water down to some simple games since wii has no storage nor computing power for anything series...
