Why is there a surge of topics boasting the PS3 is besting the Xbox 360 on a month to month comparison but no discussion of the fact that the PS3 is far behind in total numbers?

Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds, Little Big Planet. This is really shaping up for a good year for the PS3 and it's loyalists.

It will be interesting to see what XBox is working on to try to retake the lead in 2008 for the hardcore gamer sub-market.

Should be PS3 project to out sell 360 in March.

"PS3 projected to push past Xbox 360 in March" implies the PS3's total sales will pass 360's in march. However with a 9 million console lead and PS3 only out selling the 360 by 50,000 units a month (assuming that holds) it will take 180 months for PS3 to catch the 360.

Um... no offense... but:

A: XBOX360 is THE hardcore gaming system at this moment and into the future. Sorry, I don't consider the disappointing "Ratchet and Clank" or the other PS3 exclusives to deserve hardcore status.

B: Consumers are currently buying PS3 for Bluray, not games. PS3 is a Bluray player that also plays some games. Period. Let's see Sony first turn the PS3 into a GAMING system before attempting to be considered a HARDCORE gaming system.

C: I will be very surprised if Metal Gear Solid 4 come out on time... and it is pretty sad that PS3 owners have to pin ALL their hardcore hopes on a single game. (Grand Turisomo is a driving game... not very hardcore in my book).

first off, these are us numbers only. ps3 is outselling xbox by far GREATER numbers everywhere else so there goes your 180 months, lol. the only reason 360 has more sales is because they were ALONE in the marketplace for their first year and have been around twice as long as ps3. even still, ps3 sold more in their first year than 360 did theirs and ps3 had to deal with competition from 360 and wii. the 360 is declining, face facts. ps3 is only starting to pick up steam. you xbots were so cocky in that first year and we said all along that it wouldnt last. you will all be buying ps3's soon enough. might as well wait till your 360 rrod again, lol.

a little while back Toms posted some charts showing the sales of the X360, ps3, and wii for the last 2 years or so. It would be neat to have a refresh of that every month or so, and also to see where they all stand on the world stage, as well as month to month from their release dates. I have the funny feeling that the wii is smacking down worldwide, and the ps3 is actuially rather ahead in the world market. But it would be neat to see the actuial numbers.

So maybe the title should have read "PS3 sales projected to push past Xbox 360 (again) in March". The point the article is making is that 360 is not selling as well as ps3. And yes everyone knows that there are more 360s out there because they have been selling for a year longer. What matters is what is selling now. The ps2 has sold over 100 million more units than any of these new consoles but no one seems to get annoyed that this fact is not mentioned in every video game news story.
I have never bought a game console but I received a ps2 as a present a few years ago. Now I'm hooked on series like GTA and Metal Gear Solid. I'm seriously thinking of buying a ps3 once these come out.
Before the xbox fanboys tear me apart, the 360 is fun but my friends who play them are all either on their 2nd or 3rd console due to RRoD (luckly at MS's expense not there's). While the ps3s have never had any problems.

look at the world wide numbers. They are barely out selling the 360 month over month world wide. Google it if you don't believe me. At their current rate in or outside of the US they are not catching the 360 this generation which was my point.

The PS3 needs to out sell the 360 by an avg of 150,000 consoles a month just to pull even in 5 years.

BTW I own a PS3, Wii, and 360. Maybe if you had a real job and went to college you could too.

I'm not surprised at RockHop though. He's been spitting venom at the PS3 and BluRay for nearly a year now.

Unfortunately for most of the Sony haters, they can't walk away from their past predictions as much as they can't walk away from the hot steaming bowl of crow that sits in front of most of them. The numbers don't lie, and the PS3 has been beating the Xbox360 in monthly sales virtually every month since the start of '08 according to NPD.

Of course, there's the month-to-month versus total sold argument. But what the console makers care about is "what have you done for me lately." Past sales leads don't help balance sheets this month. Momentum and consumer hype mean a lot in the gaming industry, and the Xbox360 just doesn't have the same luster it used to.

well the numbers are out now, sony did not beat the xbox, they didnt lose by much, but thats not the point. this clowns prediction was wrong. and the above sony fanboys like fredo were wrong. and in software sales, ps3 only had one game in the top ten and it was tenth, the 360 had four.

Letme see here, the march numbers just came out, so every month since the start of 08 included both january and february, a whopping two months, and sony won 'virtually every month' was it once or twice fredo? i know it isnt three cause xbox beat ps3 in march......feel the burn fanboy fredo

These are only guestimates on actual figures, the real sales numbers haven't been released yet.

As a matter of fact, Mr Pachter is renowned in the gaming industry for pulling numbers out of his *ss (or some other, unspeakable orifice on his person...)

The actual figures on software sales from ELSPA and ChartTrack make for a much more interesting read. Despite what you hear about console numbers, games figures (both units and value) show the 360, Wii, DS and PC to be beating the PS3 by a very long shot. Which goes to show that people are not buying games for the PS3, in spite of the supposed number of console units shifted (which are all repoerted directly by Nintendo, MS and Sony anyway!)

When it comes to games developers and publishers, these are the figures they will be looking at!

Of course the PS3 will eventually outsell the 360 on a month-to-month basis, if for no other reason than market saturation. At some point, everyone who wants a 360 will have bought one. The PS3 will reach that point, too, but later (since it came out later). In the intervening period, more PS3s will sell.

Of course, plenty of people have both. It's not an either/or scenario, and neither one needs to crush the other to "win". And MS and Sony make more money on games than they do on consoles. So all the shouting about console sales is pretty silly, IMHO.

Saying Xbox360 sold 9 million just because it sell in the past when they were alone in the market it is exactly like me saying ps2 sold 100million not 9 million :). Enjoy the above article and calm your sugar induced hyperactivity.

Instead of everyone arguing over opinions based on what is sitting under their TV. Go take a look at TG's new sales charts, and make assumption based on the raw numbers, not personal allegiance to the vendor. I play a 360, PC and DS, however from the charts you can see the Wii has the overall trend to be the leader for sheer "volume" of consoles sold. However the top software sales show the 360 continues to be strong. For the PS3 the numbers continue to be good but not great, the trend is positive but unless some amazing price drop or game is release I can't believe anyone that tells me the PS3 would overtake Microsoft or Nintendo. Again if the PS3 were a bit cheaper, it might improve the chances...

Feel the burn? Lol. Hardly. PS3 beat Xbox360 by sizeable amount both January and February. Xbox360 beat the PS3 by 5,000 units out of 262,000 (less than 2%) -- a win for the Xbox360, but hardly a "burn". In fact, I find it interesting that with such a close margin of victory, that TGDaily didn't post the statistical margin of error.

Am I a fanboy? Maybe. I own a PS3 and enjoy the heck out of it. And I'm on my first PS3. Not many Xbox360 owners can say that (the main reason I didn't buy won in fact).

I'm confident the PS3 will make future gains. I just won't spit venom at the other side while I wait for the numbers to roll in like the Xbox fanatics and Sony/Blu-Ray haters.

"Virtually every month" because we didn't know about March. NPD did report significant wins for PS3 over the Xbox in both Jan. and Feb. that were much more sizeable than this month's statistical dead heat.

Typical mal-contents, though; they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Instead of touting what Xbox360 has going for it in Q2, they attack on the first month of the year they have something to brag about.

I'll take 2/3 with a near tie for the 3rd. We'll see what April brings.

I don't get why "market analysts" feel so compelled to make sales predictions over and over again. I mean, if I predicted that by the time that you finish reading this sentence someone has been born, breathed or died, what life changing news did I just deliver to you? Probably nothing good came of that, and I'm sure someone can validate my predictions making what I just said true. So, can I get some wild news coverage on my predictions please?

Now that I've tried this prediction game, I think I can see why they make these predictions... These people are attention starved and want people to listen to them - no matter how wrong they are. Hmm, all this is about as useless as tits on a bull, which I also predict will not be used to feed many calf's this month. (That one was free.)

... why people care about sales figures.
At the end of the day, neither the ps3 or xbox are going to fade away into oblivion any time soon.

Can't people just be happy with what they have?
Why must we have the need to feel that the product we bought is superior because it has bigger sales figures?

If the console you bought (be it ps3 or xbox) is so great and superior why aren't you playing on it now instead of bitching about sales figures on a website?

Then again I don't own either of these consoles. Maybe that's why at the end of the day, when it comes to sales figures I simply don't give a f*ck.

Sales number don't matter. It's all about the software. Right now the 360 is the console for games and media. Granted the PS3 has blu-ray, but I'm currently more than happy with DVD quality and content.

I think the best thing did happen to me today. My friend(own only PS3) asked if I were excited for GTA IV. I said sure, but I'm still enjoying alot of the DLC for Mass Effect. Then I might pick that up and play GTA IV but I want to beat Gears on hardest difficultly. He was kind of taken by that statement. I did ask him, "What games are you playing until GTA IV drops?" He just mumble somethign about blu-ray winning. Just proof it's about the game library.

Can't wait till Fable 2.
