Hewlett-Packard and Dreamworks announced a new display technology that promises consistent color accuracy between content production and viewing environments. The companies claim they have created the industry’s first combination of true 30-bit color (1 billion colors) technology in an LED-backlit LCD at a fraction of the cost of most high-end, studio-quality LCD displays. HP claims that this specific monitor will provide “richer color and darker blacks than previously available through LCD display technology”.

“Fraction of the cost”, of course, does not mean that it is generally affordable. The LCD is not expected to make its way into consumer markets, but will be marketed towards the digital content creation industry. HP believes the monitor will appeal to “experts in broadcast, film/video post-production, animation and graphic arts fields”. The new display will include factory presets for all color ranges specified by the NTSC, SMPTE, sRGB, Rec. 709, Adobe RGB and DCI standards.

Pricing has not been announced.
