Foster City (CA) - Sony has released the 2.30 firmware update for the Playstation 3, giving a major overhaul to the Playstation Store digital download platform.

Sony has not updated the store with new content for two weeks while it worked on the update.  Today's upgrade also adds DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray Discs.

The new Playstation Store is now a proprietary application instead of the current Web-based format, allowing users to have more seamless navigation and quicker download times.





The first new update for the PS Store is scheduled for this Thursday, its regular update day, including a fully downloadable version of the PS3 game Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Users will no longer be able to access the old Playstation Store, as they will be forced to download the firmware update before they can access any online content.

Additionally, with the new firmware, the PS3 will finally support DTS-HD Master Audio, which is considered just about the best audio technology available for video playback.

Audiophiles have criticized the PS3 for not supporting the high-end DTS format, which is able to play back an uncompromised version of the original master recording.  To date, DTS-HD functionality has been one of the only reasons to buy a standalone Blu-ray Disc player over the PS3.

any firmware update on any electronic can brick your console.... But then again, I installed this update on my ps3 and it runs fine. The chance of bricking so so slim since there is only 4 set of variation of hardware out there. 20G,40G,60G and 80G.... it's not that hard for sony to test them all. if you had hacked your ps3...it's your own fxxxxx problem, not sonys. And if you unplug it during upgrade, it's your own problem too. Mine is connected to a UPS battery for my whole HD TV and ps3 and receiver. There is zero chance of a power outage.

yes...well, I think only apple will brick your purchase on purpose. And only xbox will be brick on its own by overheating itself. xbox HD-DVD fanboys are all so sensetive too.

You are permitted to install Ubuntu and such while still being able to play games online. However, from what i've read, there are a couple of small issues...no biggie really. However, sony doesn't support linux... so no accelerated graphics support in linux/ubuntu But It makes a great movie/emulator/Pc though. I'd rather use my X360 on the other hand. Can't say anything about this perticular update. Wish i knew.

That's what i meant when i said i'd rather have my 360 modded into a media center. I think its archetecture is more in simlitide that of a Pcs and therefore could be a better pc/emulator/

problem with new ps3 store update.

have use the new store a few days. it's more organised than before. But there is a serious problem. the pictures load so much slower than the old web base ps3 store. it take a while for the icons/picture for each game to load. I just wonder because it's the first time it's going there or everytime you see the same thing it will have to download from internet again... it better be cached.
