Foster City (CA) - Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the latest slate of Playstation 2 and PSP games that will no longer have support for online connectivity.

In total, 14 titles published by Sony will have their online operations shut down by the end of June, including a couple that were made exclusively for online play.

Ceasing online operations for old console games is common, especially when they have seen little to no recent online activity.  Of note on the PS2 side are Lemmings, Jak X, Amplitude and Syphon Filter Omega Strain.  Additionally, Eyetoy: Chat and Twisted Metal: Black Online, which are online exclusives, will be taken offline.  For the PSP, Lemmings and World Tour Soccer 2 will be affected.

Some of the titles were only released in Europe. The full list of PS2 games included in the shut-down, according to DB Techno, is below.

The games are scheduled to go offline by the end of the day on June 30.

because no one buys and plays them. If it's popular like world of warcraft...would you think they turn it off? These are are bottom of the junk games.

If there's nobody playing them there can still be at least 1 server up hosting 8 gamerooms. They don't have to stop it all, especially with the dropping prices of gigahertz and the increasing number of cpu cores. Nintendo ceased to offer support for it's NES after more than 20 years but sony can't manage to keep up some low maintenance servers for 5 years? LAME

if they drop the slower selling games people will be forced to move up to a newer game. Even if these games are still selling they are more likely to be circulating the used game bins. Sony makes no money from the trade of used titles.

I mean seriously, I run several servers myself and I'm in the process of making an online server-based game. I know that these games may be demanding console-side, but server side they only need high end if they are connected to many users. If, say, only 10 people are playing online in each of these games, that is a total of 140 people. Now, while you couldn't run 14 game servers on one physical server, you could put more than one on each box. I guess since they do have servers all over the world that may become a problem. But I guess Sony has never really been well known for good online back in those days. It would be cool if Sony would allow people who want to play online to have their own server (or maybe someone have a hacked server), but I know they would never do that. Oh well. Besides, playing with friend with you is much more fun to me.

It has nothing to do with hardware really, It's called bandwidth, why support a game that no one really plays when they can allocate that bandwidth else where. It's called penny pinching they will save money and milk money any way they can it's called business.
