oh my god. This thing has come an incredibly long way since the days I saw it trying to traverse some little rocks. Amazing! Congrats to the developers!

It's mind-blowing to see BigDog's reactions to ice, and rough terrain, and even being kicked. The way it scrambles and attempts to recover it's balance appears so organic. It truly appears to mimic nature... and that's what is scary to see.

Combine BigDog's movement abilities with the cognitive abilities of the AI being experimented inside second life and you might truly get something to get scarred by.

"The scientists also unsuccessfully tried to knock the BigDog over by kicking the poor thing. Fortunately the robot stood upright ... and is probably now plotting its revenge." - LOL!

Just the complexity of the system, motion dynamics, vision and sensors, balance, combined to function so coherently.

Something similar to this would be great for Patrols in Iraq. To help pave the way for clearing explosives on the ground that have been taking out our troops. While aiding the troops on patrol with supplies.

This is a great thing. Maybe this could be used in the future to help those who can't walk get around better?

Scary? You've been watching too many horror movies, haven't you? Fiction is based on unrealistic probabilities. That's why it's fiction. If you want horror, look at the World as it is NOW, not in the future. War, famine, disease, humans are more horrific than any machine will ever be.

That is AMAZING! I just hope then fix the noise issue. The enemy would hear that coming from miles away.

Impressive demonstration, however, as was pointed out it is very loud. One of the factors we are judging our UGS platorms on in the military is the noise factor. The military has learned the value of stealth with our first generation robots (air and ground)currently deployed in combat theaters. nothing makes a soldier more leary than when his robot makes too much noise and draws attention to their position. Dont forget these platforms are mostly used for intel missions...noise is not your friend in those situations. But clearly this guy is a prototype, so I dont see it as something that cant be overcome with refinements.

May not be as good for IED detection as you think...these will cost a bundle, and those legs while agile probably could not survive a blast. Thats why UGS for those purposes are typically short and stout, to lower the systems profile to minimize blast impact. This design however, appears better suited for intel missions (if they make it quieter), logistics operations and yes...weaponized/hardened for combat operations.
