Dallas (TX) - The Cyberathlete Professional League, one of the defining professional video game competition organizations, has announced that it has shut down its operations for good.

"Effective immediately, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) will cease operations. Therefore, all CPL events currently scheduled for 2008 are hereby canceled," said CPL in a statement.

The CPL was one of the first gaming leagues, launched in 1997, and helped pave the path for today's competitive video game industry.  Unfortunately that also led to its own demise, as bigger leagues like the Major League Gaming, Championship Gaming Series and World Cyber Games.

CPL will continue to sell its brand of computer gaming accessories.
