Helsinki (Finland) - Nokia announced today that it will add support for Microsoft's online video technology Silverlight to millions of handsets.

The newly expanded partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, both market share leaders in their respective fields, will bring the Silverlight platform to Nokia's Series 60 phones.  That's the label for the company's line of high-end smartphones.

It also noted it will add the same functionality to less expensive Series 40 phones thereafter.

Nokia and Microsoft have worked together before, two years ago to add Windows Media support to mobile handsets and then last year to incorporate Microsoft's PlayReady DRM technology.

Nokia spokesperson Mark Durrant clarified in a Reuters story, "We continue to support Flash and several other technologies."
