San Jose (CA) - Ebay's online payment site Paypal has issued a warning that Apple's Safari browser makes users more vulnerable to phishing.

Safari is the default browser on Macintosh computers and the iPhone.  A PC version was also released last year.  Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying it is one the safest Web browser available.  However, Paypal disagrees.  

"Apple, unfortunately, is lagging behind what they need to do, to protect their customers," said Paypal chief security officer in a PC World story.  "I'd love to say that Safari was a safer browser, but at this point it isn't."

Safari does not have built-in phishing filters like the most recent versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera do.  It also does not include Extended Validation certificates, another technology used to block phishing attacks.

I am waiting for apple fanboys to say their browser is safe... well, it could be save from virus since no one care to write for them... The apple browser like a open door house in a upscale neighborhood in the country side. No body robs them because no one is around. Is it safe? Not really since doors are wide open....

Anyone who owns a mac and thinks there safe is crazy. No one bothered with Mac OS in the past because there simply wasn't enough users to make it worth their while. Now that the Mac has gotten more popular more and more security flaws are discovered daily. Apple has been pretty good about fixing them but their still relaying on the hacker community to come up with them first (just like M$). So beware, your not really safer on a Mac.

to a cirtain extent thats true. i would never use a mac, but a large number of the people using mac use them not because they are stupid, but because they are technophobic IMO. the windows OS, and to a far greater extent the verious linux OS's, allow for great customisation of control. this scares a lot of the people who use a mac, so they opt for an OS that does everything for them.

@Me and Sir_Substance. I write code for Linux and OS X. I do not consider my self to be simple minded, stupid or a technophobe. OS X can be customised as well as Linux. You can even run it without the GUI (You can even to this by SSH). OS X is by far the most polished version of Unix on the market.
