Pricewatch – Many retailers already have adjusted to the outcome of the HD format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD. HD DVD players are now available for less than $90 – and are cheaper than many upscaling DVD players. And there appears to be a certain demand - first stores are reporting they have run out of supply.
Two days after Toshiba has announced it is quitting the format war, the HD video landscape has changed dramatically. HD DVD fire sales have been reported across the nation, with most movies now selling in the $12 - $20 range, down from $25 - $35. But what if you are still interested in buying a HD DVD player?
Prices of Toshiba’s players have been on a steady decline for several months and it appears that retailers now intend to get rid of their remaining in-stock players quickly. The current average prices of the three most recent HD DVD players looked like this as of this morning (images courtesy of Pricegrabber.com):
Toshiba HD-A3: Average price as of 2/21/08: $125 (curve not yet updated with latest data)
Toshiba HD-A30: Average price as of 2/21/08: $139 (curve not yet updated with latest data)
Toshiba HD-A35: Average price as of 2/21/08: $238 (curve not yet updated with latest data)
Keep in mind that these trend lines show average e-tail prices, which may be significantly higher than what you actually pay at an online store, due to higher price tags on store fronts as well as certain stores that simply haven’t updated their prices yet. On a closer look, player prices have dropped sharply within the last two days.
The entry-level HD-A3 model, which carries a MSRP of $149.99, is now offered for as low as $89.99, by stores such as TigerDirect or CompUSA. Most other large stores, including Amazon.com and Circuit City are offering the device for $99.99.
The 1080p version HD-A30 (MSRP $199.99) can be purchased for $119.99 (with most retailers charging between $129 and $139) – which makes it one of the cheapest 1080p upscaling DVD players on the market today. The flagship HD-A35 is already reported out of stock at some stores and currently sells for as low as $169, according to Pricegrabber.com.
Blu-ray players, on the other side have shown little or no impact. There was no significant increase or decrease in average prices this week.
Here are the trend lines for two popular models (images courtesy of Pricegrabber.com):

Sharp BD-HP20U: Average price as of 2/21/08: $326 (curve not yet updated with latest data)
It will be interesting to see how LG’s hybrid HD DVD/Blu-ray player will develop over the next few days and weeks. As of now it remains the most expensive HD player on the market today with an average retail price of $692 as of this morning (image courtesy of Pricegrabber.com):
