The whispering campaign has been talking about 33% failure rates all year!

This is good news, if anything, in that case.

Since they didn't track by motherboard revision, it is almost worthless though. New 360 MBs should have a very low fail rate and originals a very high rate.

Is 16% the average between the new and the old?

Perhaps the 16% rate is reflective of the revised xbox inclusion?

That's a "glass is 1/10th full" way of looking at things. A 15% failure rate, no matter how you look at it, is appalling. Someone, lots of someones, should be losing their jobs for that.

I wonder how many of the new Rev 360 fail? I haven't had any problems with the elite (Rev 1.1) and hoping I don't.

Yet another example of the crap that Microsoft keeps putting out and that people keep buying anyway. They can't put out decent software and apparently they can't do decent hardware either. And still, the Microsoft brand somehow keeps instilling a feeling of trust in many people. It is mind boggling, I just don't get it.

It must be something with the M. Both Microsoft and McDonalds somehow manage to make billions of dollars with products that are mediocre at best, and usually worse than that.

From what I heard the new 360 revision with the smaller chip actually lowered temperatures enough to allow them to use a smaller cooler to cool everything.

If this is indeed true then overheating should no longer be a problem unless of course you are one of those idiots who stuff the xbox360 between the sound system and the edge of the cabinet and then throw a dvd player on top and behind it all you have the 360 powerblock.

If you are one of those people of course you are going to have problems.

I know some people who still have there 360's from launch day that are running just fine, but they leave them out in the open when using them and then put them somewhere unseen when not in use.

I've never had a problem with mine. I do make sure it is well ventilated. I've noticed other guys placing them in enclosed entertainment centers, laying clothing on them. All bad moves. The thing is not like a VCR. It's a very high powered computer, it needs proper cooling.

It was the first console to release in the next gen, anybody remeber when all those PS2 stoped reading discs? I had three friends PS2 that broke within a year and a half of them buying it...

My original 360, purchased two years ago, got the 3 rings of death. I sent it back to Microsoft and got another. After another year this one has the 3 rings of death as well. I'm sending this one back to Microsoft for another replacement. Good thing Microsoft has given us a 3 year warranty!

I use my 360 for everything... games, MCE Extender, TV, Moves, Music, Pictures. It is on ALL THE TIME. Love it, but wish it would last longer than a year. Hopefully, I'll get one of the 84% good ones this time :)

I've been a PS player from the start and have remained one because of my satisfaction with the PS exclusives. I have no problems with Xbox or the 360. I was thinking of getting a 360 as well as my PS3 because of the 360's one year advantage and impressive line of exclusives. The qualify contol has been the only reason why I never pulled the trigger. Microsoft should care a more about their loyal Xboxers and the converts from PS to let this stuff slip.

I first purchased the xbox 360 approximately one year after it was first released. That xbox died approximately 8 months after purchase. during those 8 months it was play about a month at a time, then about for month break, and then maybe for three months til it broke. the second xbox 360 did about the same. sometimes they showed the red rings, sometimes they just froze shortly after use and then eventually wouldn't boot. now I am on my third, hopefully no issues. almost everyone i know who plays their xbox somewhat often has had a failure. my advice, buy from costco, great return policy.

i went through 3 or 4 myself due to the notorious "Disc Read Error," but Sony never charged me a dime for a repair or replacement. Even years later.

It took Microsoft a while to admit their was a problem, and then eventually did the right thing and took responsibility by extending warranties.

So because you had three friends with hardware failure, that must mean it was widespread...
Why does this specific failing of reason seem to perpetuate itself over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over....

I got the "disk read error" on my PS2 about 5 months after I bought it and $ony told be tough luck it's past the 90 day warranty. At least M$ is admitting the fed up and are fixing the consoles.

I have the 3 red lights after like 5-6 months from my purchase. After opening my 360 I saw that design is all wrong. But once you read some articles about this situation you have your key to troubled free xbox 360. You just need to use it opened. Put some Artic silver or Coolmaster permium (like I did) between GPU and cooler. Then put a fan on the cooler and NEVER put DVD-ROM back on the top of them again. Use your xbox 360 with it's case opened as it is. Also there are two ram blocks that sits beyond the range of current cooler. So put some metal blocks on them or put (like I did) a coolmaster ram cooler. I did these things and sometimes I play for 7-8 hours without shutting down my console. NEVER had any problems so far (4 months).

My original Xbox360 is still gaming strong and hard. Besides, that 15% is for version 1.0 only, which are no longer being sold. Later versions have the same 3% failure that Wii and PS3 has. So 15% is an incorrect number as with the larger number of later versions being sold the real true failure rate is much much lower.

You have any sources to cite for those failure rates vs. hardware version?

I can't find any on the net. In fact, all I find if the analyst blanket number of ~16% and the rumored stories from EA talking about failure rates of up to 30%.

I had a 360 that i took great care of, it broke down after 8 months of play (Three rings of course),
I sent it back to xbox, and they fixed it free of charge. After a month with no xbox I finialy got it back, pluged it in and within 10mins of play it froze,this time there was two rings. so i called xbox coust. support, they gave me a bunch of crap, telling me that its overheating...(sure, after 10 mins) well to make along story short, they told me that i would need to send it off for another month. So i just got the third one back, and it is a re-ferb piece of crap, it has scratches, and when i tip it up on its side it sounds like a box of legos. It works, but for how long???? I just want a working system that wasn't dropeed of a building and then repaired and sent to me!!! My luck it will breake down after the warranty expires! Ive been loyal to XBOX, but after this the PS3 is looking like a better brand to back!
