When the police tell you or ask you to do something do not do the following
1) argue with them
2) ignore them and continue with what you were doing
3) call them names
4) anything other than what they asked/told you to do.

FYI it's not resisting arrest unless you are told "YOU ARE UNDER ARREST" and the cop said that if she didn't stop she would be arrested, and cops abuse every power they have. I have never met one that doesn't. Tasing the woman was out of line in every respect. Just by watching the video, it looked like the police officer neglected protocol in attempting to diffuse the situation first. Your first attempts should be non violent and non aggressive, and the cop was on an obvious power trip because she was aggressive with the woman the intire time. Thats why the victim was backing up to get away from an over aggressive power abuser. Now I'm not saying that this wasn't hillarious and would have been great to see in person, but the cop was out of line no questions about it, and that lady is probably going to be pretty wealthy when DBPD settles out of court with her.

Credit card came up as stolen, the lady was walking out of the store, and did not cooperate with the officer when being questioned? I sure would have thought that was a CC thief the way that happened.

If you got the message that your spouse, parents or childs were severely hurt in an accident, do you seriously believe that you would stay calm until the credit card is checked a few times, the bank is called and the police officer finished with his talk?

In today's world one can not really blame the police for using force if their orders are not followed. People are being killed for nothing nowadays and sometimes just for the fun of it or for a few dollars.
Maybe this woman would not have been one of those people and she simply panic, but it could also have been one of those times when she is actually armed and not worried about to use the weapon and the police officer could have ended up dead.

I work at Best Buy Canada and I have dealt with customers who have stolen credit cards and if you suspect any suspicious behavior you don't just let them walk away with the card. You report it. If they resist arrest then that only makes them look MORE guilty.

2 of those 3 people that died because of Tasers died in Canada. Albeit they died of a much stupider reason. This lady was completely refusing to follow the police officers orders. If I was the officer I would have tazered her too. In the case in Canada the RCMP officer had nooo idea what the guy was saying and the guy was getting upset so he tazered him. THAT was stupid. What this officer did was not. Big difference.

that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Working at Best Buy I can tell you thats not how the system works. If your magnetic strip is warn out it will prompt you with an error saying cannot read, then you manually punch in the numbers of the credit card and stamp it onto the receipt. If there is a fraudulent card what happens is the bank (or card company) sends you a code, to your POS, saying it is a stolen or fraudulent card. There is no mistaking the code.

So do some research before you make such stupid comments and ultimately make yourself look like an idiot.

Dude, I'm glad you don't run the police force. You think the cop had the right to taze her because she "might" have been a dangerous person? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I might be dangerous, does that mean a cop can taze me when my credit card doesn't work? Tasers are an alternative to guns and meant for dealing with dangerous criminals. I don't see how a 90 pound woman BACKING away from a cop is so dangerous that the cop should risk killing her by shooting her with a taser. People have been killed by those things and if a cop is so incompetent that they can't do their job without attacking an innocent civilian, than maybe they need to consider a career where that's acceptable, like the DMV.

What's the very basics of police work. You cannot expect an officer to walk away from a situation unresulted. If you don't cooperate or comply with an officer, you are forcing the officer to the next step: force. Lucky for this stupid lady that it was a taser, not a gun, thanks to technology, she can still whine and cry and be stupid again next time.

It doesn't matter what happened, a person needs to be considerate of others around them, and in general be a rational human being. And People should NEVER resist what a police officer is directing you to do as long as it is a rational request.

Best Buy's register's somehow made her card come up as "stolen"
The cashier called a POLICE OFFICER to her instead of speaking to the customer, you know what IDENTIFICATION is? You know the person's NAME is on their credit card? It's an easy fix, the cashier screwed up heinously.
The police officer did NOT tell her she was under arrest, THEREFORE the officer did NOT have the right to charge her with resisting arrest NOR did they have the right to zap her.
The police officer showed ZERO concern for the woman's emotional state and FAILED to ask for identification, which, again would have prevented this entire mess from happening.
The police officer leaped to a conclusion without following proper procedure, and used excessive force, a double whammy of violations.

She received a distressing phone call, was emotionally upset, and to all you jerks, A. Get a kid, have them be in trouble, B. get zapped by an idiot, and then get back to us, until then, shut it.

This woman has every right to sue both Best Buy and take her complaint against the local police office to court, the Best Buy employee did not follow proper procedure, I assume the management did not follow proper procedure, a police officer did not follow proper procedure, and then executed excessive force on a confused mother without her being under arrest.

How can you people defend the cop? The officer ATTACKED her with a WEAPON. Since when do police have the right to physically attack someone who is backing away from them harmlessly. The woman was not violent, she did not run away, she was upset. If the officer didn't have a taser, would she have the right to hit the woman with a nightstick? Maybe she would have shot the woman in the knee to get her point across.

The resisting arrest charge was garbage because the woman was not being arrested. The officer had reasonable suspicion to stop and search the woman. A search would have found her ID and ended the situation. To arrest someone you need probable cause. There were no grounds to arrest her as the credit card belonged to her.

Revrant, I agree with you on every part except the Best Buy employee. In my experience as a cashier, the rule was very clear that you do NOT tell someone when their card registers as stolen. You keep the card and call the 1-800 number on the back. We were always told to stall the customer while dealing with the card. In the end the card belongs to the issuing bank, not the person holding it.

Now the employee probably thought that it would be wisest to put the situation in the hands of the police since one was present. That clearly wasn't the best decision, but I can't blame some 16 year old getting minimum wage for taking the easy way out.

The woman should had taken a few moments and talked to the cop and the cop should had not tased her.
Looking at the video she did not do anything to threaten the cop, she backed away and had her hands up. I don't know what the call was about but I know if I had a kid and they were hurt(just using this as an example) I would want to rush out of the store and be mad that someone was trying to slow me up. In the video the reporter even says it was a mistake and the card was hers and not stolen.

When I worked for a retail store I was told if a card came up stolen to keep the card. What if the cop had been trigger happy and shot and killed this woman over a mistake? They were both wrong but I think the cop and the store are more to blame then the woman. This just brings up more questions then answers. Like why would the casher alert the cop and not the store security?
It seems to me this could had been resolved differently.

First of all, due to the legalities of insulting someone and being sued most companies won't even call someone out if their card is rejected. I work for the bank, and I can tell you most of the time the card doesn't say "Stolen" it would say "declined". Rarely do we actually flag a card to show "Stolen". Second, at all the people who are claiming the customer should have calmed down and listened to the officer and it's her fault that it happened... Wait until you have a kid, you get a phone call that something terrible has happened to your child. This honestly reminds me the movie Anger Management when he is just minding his own business asking for a pillow when the flight deputy comes over and shocks him. Some people should not have power.

There are some bad cops. Even the good cops know it, but this probably wasn't one of them. If the woman would have calmly answered the police mans questions. It might have take two minutes to verify that the card was hers and she simply made a mistake by walking out.

I'm sure getting tazered sucked but do we really want to police to just allow bad guys to walkout of a store after attempting to use your credit card to buy stuff?

The cops walk a fine line everyday, I havent seen any video of this encounter, but I believe that most police use good judgement, most of the time. I also know that most people are stupid. Sorry you got zapped lady, but you are ok now, next time, hang up the phone, and do one thing at a time.

Cops put their life on the line every day. This woman wasn't acting rationally, so she got some electricity. Big deal. The police officer did what she had to in order to neutralize the suspect, without shooting her I might add. It doesn't matter if you just got a distressing call, that doesn't give you the right to defy a police officer. The lady was in the wrong, the police officer was 100% correct in her actions.

You think the police yell "You're under arrest!" to people who open fire on them? No... It's pretty much assumed after they shoot at them and run, they’ll be charged with resisting arrest (among many other things); same thing here. She kept backing away from the officer, more than likely raising her voice and cursing, and was making her way toward the exit. You can safely assume once you've defied an officer and start acting suspicious that you're going to be detained, at least until the matter is resolved.

Her card came up as stolen, she incredibly got a phone call that required her to bail right at the moment it didn't go through, and started acting extremely irrational once the law was involved. Yeah, she says her kid is in trouble and the police officer should just let her go. Give me a break. It might have all been a bad coincidence, but if the lady had dealt with it the RIGHT way, she wouldn't have gotten 50,000 volts and would probably have been walking out the store 5 or less minutes later.

Live and learn and respect the law. This isn't the 90's. You people have made it so cops have to walk on eggshells all day long. Now, there is no such thing as looking dangerous or looking like a puppy. You won't know until a crime is committed, and then it is often too late. bear in mind that nowadays even kids, innocent looking of course, have their shootings in schools with a number of dead most of the time and a higher number injured.
Of course, comparing a school shooting with that woman might be a bit strong, but the point is that I do not believe that the law enforcement can afford to take any risks nowadays.
Especially not judging how dangerous a person is by how they look or if it is a male or woman.

It could all have been solved I am sure without any fuss or too much time lost if that woman would simply co-op with the officer on site.

I can understand both sides of the story. If it was her credit card, why did it come up as stolen? She could have indicated to the cashier that it was a family emergency. I can understand that she was upset but argueing with the police is not a good idea.

The article states Beeland was argueing with the cop and then she got tasered. This sequence of events do not add up.

If you are not going to arrest a person there isn't any way you could justify shocking them.

It seems from the article, the card was in fact hers. And the error is that of the Best Buy associate.

I would say that best buy is on the hook for this one. Their associate got the police involved and a situation ensued. I can not condone breaking the law or resisting arrest. However, if you are not in the wrong you need to speak up for yourself. That is what she did. That is not wrong.

The policeman over-reacted. The use to the tazer was an inapproriate use of force, because the woman posed no threat to anybody. The use of force is only appropriate when there is a threat.

Fact: the lady did nothing wrong, and was blinding accused based on what a machine surmised.

So an article "verifies" the card is hers, so immediately it's not stolen? What procedure was used for verification other than the press interviewing her, getting the sensationalist answer they wanted and then writing it up as fact?

This is beyond suspicious. Card came up as stolen, buying lots of stuff, family emergency, acting irrationally when confronted by cop. Of course, it could all be a giant coincidence, but you tell me.

If a cop asks for ID, you give them ID. If a cop asks you to calm down, don't flail your arms and run for the exits. If you're confronted by a cop, be polite and understanding, while sorting out whatever issue it is, instead of acting aggresively and defensive off the bat. It's really that simple if you don't want to get tasered.

Rog, you are not required to give a police officer your ID just because he asks for it. You aren't even required to carry ID. You are required to give your name if asked, and that's about it. The only time you are required to hand an officer your ID is when you are operating a motor vehicle and he is verifying your license. Even then he needs a reason to ask for it.

If you'd watched the video you'd see she wasn't running. She was backing away because the officer was being very aggressive. Police are supposed to use tasers as self defense. Not to attack an upset woman backing away.

The most common call the police get is for domestic disturbances where a couple is fighting. These are very emotional events and the police need to approach with a huge amount of caution. They are trained for this! They are trained to handle these situations! It is very apparent in the video that the officer did not handle this properly, she just went for the taser!

This didn't get posted last time I said it so I'll try again. The card was simply rejected. The moron at Best Buy ASSUMED it was stolen since the woman left without it. Anyone who has used credit cards knows they can be rejected for any number of reasons including overspending, or simply swiping it the wrong way.

The Card was not rejected. It was not listed as stolen. She simply stepped away to take a phone call. This stepping away is what the clerk regarded as suspicious. Then the clerk yelled for a cop. And the cop game on all hardnosed at her while she was having an upsetting phone conversation.

We don't live in a police state. We don't live in a country where cops or clerks can harass you with no provocation. We have a free society.

The cop was wrong. There is no justification for treating any person like this. All the woman does in the video is back off with her hands up from an overly aggressive cop.

Witnesses agreed she did not yell at the cop.

She did nothing wrong, and so no charges were filed.
