ATI takes fast bus to low-cost graphics

ATI is using the speed of the new PCI Express bus to exploit system memory for a new range of fast, low-cost graphics cards.

The standard 16-channel Express graphics bus can pass 4 gbps in each direction, compared with the 2.1 gbps total bandwidth of the old AGP bus, and the company says this allows a card to use system Ram rather than dedicated on-card video memory without an intolerable performance hit.
