Philadelphia (PA) - Tyrone Spellman has been convicted of murdering his daughter, in an angry rage that was ignited because she knocked over his Xbox.

According to media reports, Spellman's daughter Alayiah pulled on the cords of the Xbox, causing the system to fall down and break.  Spellman then struck his daughter so hard that he cracked her skull, said prosecutors.  He may also have thrown her across the room, according to initial claims.

Spellman, who confessed to the crime within 24 hours, originally told the police that Alayiah fell out of her bed, and then tried to claim his confession was only out of protection for his wife.  Spellman's wife was asleep during the incident.

The Department of Human Services had previously been tipped by an anonymous caller that Alayiah's parents were abusive, but they were previously unable to find any evidence.

Spellman was convicted of third-degree murder and child endangerment, and faces up to 47 years behind bars.

What ever happened to public hangings for stuff like this?? Its good to know that we pay for people to live in prison after they commit horrible acts. for however long this man stays in prison we pay for: Food, Electricity, Books, Workout equipment, Cable or Sat. TV, and god knows what else. I bet he spends 2 years in prison before being let out on good behavior. Am i the only one that feels this way?

I've heard that it actually costs more for the death penalty. There is an automatic appeal which can costs millions in lawyer and court fees as the process can take over a year. Just thought i would throw that out there.

Jer - you put it best here. There are deeper issues in this person's life. Incarceration, rape, or death will not help this sort of person or those like him. He needs anger management classes by top professionals. He's lost control and there is no greater indication than this. My only hope of the outcome is that access to those professionals who could have counseled this man could be made available to others in need. It's most unfortunate that someone needed to lose her life. And I extend my deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

In New Zealand you can put a child in a tumble dryer, hang it from a line, beat it with a baseball bat.. All kinds of things. You can kill them and beat them over a period of time and you get a slap on the wrist. They have found starved to death children in rooms with only a mattress. Dead in their own crap and vomit. other kids who have broken arms and legs and then fractured skulls. Call child services and they do nothing. And it doesn't matter anyway, if you get convicted you go to jail for 8 years and get out in 4 for good behaviour. I wish NZ would listen to the US and hear that killing another human - ESPECIALLY A DEFENSELESS CHILD is just not acceptable.
