Minneapolis (MN) - Best Buy has sent notices to customers who purchased a certain Insignia brand digital photo frame because it spread malware when connected to a Windows PC.

Insignia frame NS-DPF10A has been discontinued because it was "contaminated with a computer virus during the manufacturing process," said the electronics retailer.  The virus spreads only to Windows PCs when connected via a USB cable.  Insignia is a brand owned and managed by Best Buy.

"We apologize for the inconvenience that has been caused as a result of this incident," said Best Buy in a product notice.  It did not specify how many of the frames were sold.

However, Best Buy has not issued a recall for the frame.  Instead, it is "connecting with customers who may have been impacted."  The retailer noted that it is a fairly old virus that any current anti-virus software would have caught.  It is also not a replicating Trojan, meaning it will likely not provide a serious threat to affect consumers.

Electronics don't just get "contaminated"! Best Buy is making it sound like an airborne virus slipped into the usb port of the picture frame and caught a cold. Sounds to me either someone maliciously put the virus on there, or the test computer had a virus when they were testing the frames usb port and it was transferred. But the latter doesn't make sense because Best Buy is saying it's an old virus and any anti-virus should get it. Sounds fishy to me. Nice cover Best Buy.

Duh. Of course someone put it there. Best Buy is just a retailer, they don't make any of the products. So blame Insignia for poor quality control, other than being sold through Best Buy, they really had nothing to do with it. Things like this have happened before.

The article clearly states that Best Buy owns the Insignia brand. "Insignia is a brand owned and managed by Best Buy". So it is their fault 100%. (an employee most likely)

What almost certainly happened here was that one of the machines at the development house had the virus on it, and it got included in the deployment image. This happened to Apple, too - they shipped out a bunch of iPods with a virus on them.

I'm not suprised in the least. Best Buy has proven time and time again that it does not care about its customers. Naturally there will be no recall for these frames. Best Buy won't be taking any real action to correct the problem or compensate customers.

You realize that they buy products that they lable with the Insignia Brand from a number of different suppliers. Like Sears does with Craftsman. So it is really one of the Asian technology companies' fault that some of the frames have that virus. Now BB does bear some responsibility, but not as much as you people are making them out to have.
