the people with HD DVD player will try to save their $150... they can save it by going out to all best buy and buy all HD DVD they can afford before they go broke.

My God, why can't people just let this stupid format war end? I couldn't give a rat's ass which one becomes the standard format as long as we can put the whole format thing to rest. I'm sorry for all those people who purchased players and all for HD-DVD (assuming Blu-Ray does win this), but we need some kind of finality to this format war.

On top of that I really dislike Sony way of doing things. You have to buy their specific memory stick if you get a sony Camera, that goes for all their products.

13,500 against millions of Blu-ray supporters. You have got to be joking. This is so said that the HD DVD camp dosen't know when a hole the size of Canada has been stomped right in the middle of it. The Fact is HD DVD has been dead since I returned my player the first week of January 2007. It was clear back then that I had made a mistake. HD DVD dosen't have one advantage over Blu-ray except the price of hardware that when comparing a 1080p player in both formats the difference really dosen't matter. The benifits of Blu-ray out way the small difference in price and that's the bottom line. I can't believe that Toshiba even attempted to win this format war with a clearly infearior format. The only thing I can think of is miss management. Clearly Toshiba needs some smarter people making these kind of decisions. If I was a stock holder I would be tempted to addess this situation.

Where's the 'We chose the superior technology: Blu-Ray' petition..? Let's see how many signatures it gets in 2 weeks. =)

Online petitions have a history of not working. This is another pathetic attempt to use an online petition to change something that will not change. The fact is WB already knew that they would upset people, and money speaks much louder than an online petition, which can be signed multiple times by one user skewing the numbers out of proportion.
It is also important to note that there are several Blu-ray petitions. One entitles "Let HD DVD die", which has also accrued thousands of signatures, seeking an end to the format war.
The last thing we need is for a company to change their stance again so quickly. It will confuse customers even more, upset retailers, and prolong a format war that has already gone on too long.
This will change nothing.

i'm glad someone can see thru the empty hype that the bda is trying to spew. if br was really that good, they wouldn't have to count the free br movies they give away with the ps3 as a "sale". then again, it's backed by sony so i guess i shouldn't be suprised at the lack of integrity.

The only vote that counts in this "election" is the one we make with our wallets. Blu-Ray discs have been outselling HD DVD discs (even in cross-platform titles) 2:1 for more than a year, and now recently it has jumped to 4:1. When hundreds of thousands of people are punching their ballot for Blu-Ray with their wallets every week, 20,000 signatures on a virtual petition are not enough to stem the tide. Maybe these fervent HD DVD fans should have been spending more money for the last 18 months - that's all that counts to a business.

and a little under 14K give a rip about HDDVD. That's sad. Almost as sad as the webside that is hosting the petition.

13,000 is a PATHETIC number considering there are over a MILLION standalone HD-DVD players. Obviously the vast majority of them haven't seen the petition or care to sign it.

I really like HD dvd and hope that it stays around,iam in favor of competiton,to give the consumer the right to choose the format of his/her choice,and not be forced to take what someone wants for you.

Really, what did HDDVD buyers expect? They had two options for a HD player. Either one could have lost the war - but only one had 'contingency' (The PS3 still plays PS3 games regardless of the format war winner). So, you only go out and buy a HDDVD movies if you dont mind the possibility that you are throwing your money away. A fair option for the well to do. If the idea of throwing $$ away worried you - you should have bought a PS3 - which will always be a PS3.

Simple.

... stop fighting it, admit you bought the wrong side and get it over with, 30k people (or whatever it is) picking the wrong side (that'll teach you to pick sides in stupid format wars) is better then having this drag on for years and many less consumers picking either format.

I don't get why people want to keep HD DVD alive .. its a crapyer technology .. and theres 2 High def media ... so i don't get y people want to keep it alive .. once HD DVD is down we can all jst use one ..

Get out there and buy movies. Why are the numbers 85-15 in BR favor? Do you think if it was 85-15 in HDs favor the movie studios would still drop HD-DVD? Do you think the retailers would think - oh there's good money to be made but we don't want to make it? Or are these people just trouble-makers with an agenda throwing their signature behind a cause but probably never bought a HD movie in their life? What about the majority of us who are buying Blu-ray movies, would you like to see some kind of restriction on the sale of Blu-ray movies imposed for us?

Online petitions are as worthless as the paper they're...not written on. If people want HD-DVD to "come back" from the brink, they need to buy tons of HD-DVD movies, especially for those movies sold in both HD-DVD and Blu Ray. Heck, even a "real" petition would hold little sway with companies choosing between formats, if the numbers didn't back them.

All this is doing is causing more of a PITA for consumers.

Why would you want to prolong a format war? It makes no sense...

Let me preface this post with the fact that I don't really care which format succeeds. I already have a HD-DVD player and I'm buying a PS3 within the next month or so.

Petitions are a joke. The only people that file them are on the losing side of a battle. In fact, I can recall only one time that a petition may have made a difference....when CBS cancelled Jericho. Even then I have a feeling it was the 20 tons of peanuts delivered to the CBS offices that had more of an impact.

I own a grand total of 3 HD-DVDs. I'd buy more, but frankly, most the movies I want are on Blu-Ray. Which is why I'm getting the PS3 (I'm not a big console game fan....though I do like a few games.)

Really? Huh. I guess I'm not looking hard enough.

The fact of the matter is that there are more movies being released for and available on Blu-Ray. Cheap players are not going to save a format if there's no content to play on it.

At least I've put my money where my mouth is, having nearly two dozen Blu-Ray films...

The content providers (Warner, Disney, Paramount, Universal, etc) don't care, how many movies you buy NOW. That will not decide the format war. For now the only important thing is how much money Toshiba (HD-DVD) or Sony (Blu-Ray) throw at the content providers as incentives to stay with their format.

The content providers couldn't care less who wins.
They will produce their movies in whatever format will prevail and then we (the consumers) can cry as long as we want. We will have to buy their movies on that format anyway, whether we bought them now or not.

What I don't understand is the ignorance of the american people.

Blu-Ray has REGION CODES again.
A thing millions of people in the whole world have tried to circumvent with much effort on DVDs. But nobody seems to care about that it comes back. Well, most blockbusters come from the USA so the american audience is not affected a lot by that. Only we americans can care so little about international consequences of our decisions.

And Blu-Ray even topped that integrating Intel's HDCP!
WIth HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) the corporation or producer of the Blu-Ray disc can decide in what way you are allowed to use it.
So even after you paid money for the disc and brought it home, they still have control over it.
That sounds more like a subscription than an actual sale.
I always thought, what i pay for I will own.
Not so with Blu-Ray.

Of course FOR NOW they don't activate those restrictions, but once there is no competition, you bet, they take advantage of it.

That's funny, I thought *Sony* chose Blu-Ray as the victor when they paid Fox $120 million and Warner Brothers $400 million to stop producting HD-DVD discs.

Its a blind move, if sony fails to drop the price of BD player in the near future, then we will be the losers. But supporting HD DVD is kinda retro.. Its nothing better than regular DVD except little extra capacity, compared to substantial size of BD

I guess the lack of insite is what lead people to buy HD-DVD in the first place so no doubt this is why most of their responses are simplistic.

To all the HD-DVD people who hate Sony for paying studios early in the game to distribute on BD, you should give your head a shake. HD-DVD did the same thing with paramount except that paramount knew that BD was winning by a 3:1 margin. Paramount completly dropped BD and left retailers with massive pre orders that would not be filled.

Without WB Toshiba is the only stakeholder in HD-DVD. Even Microsoft is distancing itself from HD-DVD in the wake of WB decision. BD is now a tru consortum that represents a cross-section of the entire CE industry from both hardware to software. Check out how many companies make HD-DVD players and you will know what I am talking about.

With HD-DVD Studios are already having trouble fitting content with the small capasity of HD-DVD so on technology alone BD is the right choice. Even using the same codex's BD has the space requirements to produce a better picture and sound as it has the space to reduce compression. Wait for something like Superbit on HD an I can tell you that only BD will make sense.

I feel bad for HD-DVD and all the $$ people have invested. But this time around it is Toshiba's agenda that is keeping HD Disc media in limbo and the sooner we can move forward with one format the better th whole industry will be.

For me the joy of buying movies for my collection is gone. The anticipation of a great movie arriving in the store is lost. I hope the joy will return, but not as long as Toshiba keeps flogging a dead horse.

Seems like the people supporting HD-DVD are the ones who copy/download their movies. I don't blame Sony for incorporating anti-piracy into their format... Don't modify your player! Don't download movies! If I was a studio I'd pick the more secure format too! HD-DVD is for poor people! =) Plus someone will release a region free Blu-Ray player, just like they released region free DVD players. Who cares though? Buy American!

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? People knew there were two competing formats, yet they chose to support one before there was any solid indication which would prevail. It subsequently transpired that they jumped onto the wrong horse, and now they want the stupidity of the divided market to continue because theirs had pulled up lame.

The funny side of it is that at least Betamax owners could tell themselves that they still had a clock, even if it did cost them several hundred dollars and spent most of its time blinking "12:00". Then again, I guess HD-DVD owners can still play regular DVD's. :)

Also as I have said in the past the Blu-ray players will not allow for home movies to be played see below.

Consumers should be aware that most commercial players, like the Samsung BD-UP5000, will not play a BD-R or BD-RE disk at all. In other words, the only media they will play are commercial Blu-ray movie disks, not movies made on a computer Blu-ray recorder. As a result, consumers cannot buy a Blu-Ray disk recorder for their home movies and watch them on most commercial Blu-ray players. Some early -player models permitted this, but after a grace period, new versions of player firmware prohibit it.


Of course that would explain how they will prevent someone from making a copy of a movie from the theater on a HiDef camera and making their own disks and selling them.

The problem with that is it also prevents small businesses from making Wedding Videos and Graduations etc.

Of course the response will be that the Blu-ray players are only meant to play commercial disks and never was speced to play anything else. Much like an earth grader could be used to drive you to work but was not intended for that use.

I am glad to see Big Business win and mess with the consumers in such a great fashion.

It's funny when I hear that BD owner feel bad for Hd owner. Why would I need that? You should be feeling bad for people that bough earlier BD player and now can't play the lastest BD movies. That gotta sucks. And wheres the guarantee that this won't happen again in future version releases?

I own a HD player, pay a bit more than what a decent upconverting DVD goes for. Even if HD die off tomorrow, what's the big deal??
If BD is the sole format tomorrow, I'll buy a BD player when the price is right.

Someone mention earlier.. HD player is for poor people, well I guess I'm one of those "poor people". Btw, I have about 350 DVD collections, and 20 Hddvds (Planet earth is awesome, its on both format so no need to fight over this)
My concept to that is I rather be a "poor people buying a HD player" vs "buying a BD player and be poor"

is No problems at all across the Platform. I don't
