Hollywood (CA) - HD DVD is losing support left and right, this time from the adult film studio Digital Playground.

About a couple dozen titles were released on HD DVD from the studio, making it the leader in high-def adult entertainment.  The lucrative industry has been deemed one of the most important factors in determining the success of a new format.

The fact that HD DVD had the adult film industry on its side was seen as a big plus for it, especially because Sony was purposefully not allowing any such titles to be printed on Blu-ray Discs.

However, Sony had a change of heart, and allowed Digital Playground to start releasing its titles on BD last year.  Because of the dominant force Blu-ray has in the format war, the studio has chosen to drop HD DVD support entirely, reports German publication Heise.

Digital Playground joins Warner Bros, New Line, and HBO as recent converts to Blu-ray exclusivity.  HD DVD is left with just Universal, a founding member of the format, and Paramount, which reportedly received huge monetary incentives to move away from Blu-ray.

This is hilarious. There have been so many 'experts' proclaiming for the last year that HD-DVD would win because BluRay doesn't allow porn. It kinda makes you wonder just WTF they were talking about lol

Seems like hddvd is losing ground. I didnt want Sony to win because I dont wish to see them controlling the prices of blu-ray disk and drives all they want. IMO, sony's a very greedy and aggressive company. Regardless, my $99 hddvd can be used as a nice dvd up-conversion if things really go down the drain.

I'm still glad I picked up a Walmart HDDVD for $98. Does a great job of upconverting my standard DVDs. As long as I can continue to rent HDDVD, I have no intention of buying BD. Or until such time as BD is $98 at Walmart.

Sony did not "purposefully" stop pornography on Blu-ray! Sony merely said they were not going to use their BD authoring studio to make pornographic discs. That means ANY OTHER Blu-ray authoring studio was still able to do this. Now that there are several open, it is possible for them to get on Blu. Also, once again, the porn industry has internet downloads as their main source of income. They make more with downloads than with DVDs and HD is still a niche product. This war is so unlike the VHS war that this comparison that porn will decide the winner is totally wrong! Porn is following the winner in this case! WB New Line and HBO moved first, giving BD 70% support of major studios, as a result, digital playground is following them! I must say this is the smartest move they could make. GO BLU!

Sony dont own BluRay nor do they control the prices of disks and drives. BluRay was developed by Sony & Pioneer but launched in a joint effort by 9 companies. On the other hand HD-DVD is owned 100% by Toshiba. If you dont want one company having a monopoly on the HD standard you should be supporting BluRay like most electronics companies and studios are. Didn't you ever wonder why it was that BluRay had far more manufacturer support while Toshiba were almost out on their own with HD-DVD?

What kind of person is going to buy porn on an HD format, really? I mean do the plastic surgery scars show up better on a 1080p display? Are the moans and groans really that much better in a Dolby Digatal TrueHD soundtrack, or uncompressed PCM? Perhaps they should call the format BluBall Ray.
