Anyone remembers the ASUS Extreme N7800GT Dual Graphics Card?

And I am sure someone will remember the old Voodoo cards that attempted to use dual graphics....

Still nice to finally see it from ATI directly. I guess NVidia will have to "officially" follow now, for once.

How many slots does this dual-processor R680 graphics card take? I assume it takes 2 but it looks like 3; it's so tall. I'm wondering when Asus is going to start making larger motherboards which have blank areas after their 2 - 16x slots to accommodate these larger graphics cards so these larger cards don't take 2 slots.

Now all we need are those shwanky triple core Phenoms and AMD might re-earn some respect.

with all the "let's spoil their party" that nvidia has been playing lately I guess they will be lifting their NDA for the 9800 GX2 on the 22nd and moving up the release a few weeks just to beat ATI.

It looks like a single AGP card. This would make sense since most boards have only one agp slot. I hope it works with eComStation otherwise I would not one. I am one for AMD over Intel.

It won't be Asus that makes the larger/taller motherboards. The size of the board is controlled by the formfactor like AT/ATX/BTX. And I doubt that you'll find any new mainstream formfactors that are larger since everyone is so obsessed with the idea that smaller is better.

To correct you there was a 6600gt dual graphics on one board.

Is it better to have two so-so processors or one very good one? Is graphics that multi-threaded? I thought graphics processes (like the OpenGL loop) were mainly single threaded.. Not an expert though. Thoughts?

It's the flux capacitor that makes time travel possible! More cores, therefore more pipelines are adressed direct via API so they mostly equate to scaling up to a point. CPU multicore architecture is much more complex and has to be adressed at the programming stage, not many coders are particularly offay with handling complex parallel processing so most gains thus far have been multi gpu, despite what intel / amd would have you believe.

First off, to clear the air, there were only 3; 4 integrated GPU cards made by 3dfx and NONE of them were ever released they were the spectre 1k, 2k and 3k models. Nothing that went to market before their sale to NVIDIA around December, 2000 had more than 2 cores. Also the reason Nvidia uses SLI today, is not only because it's recognizable by older gamers, (it stood for something different then) but they bought 3dfx and their technologies about 7 years ago.

Second, this card takes two slots, and theoretically should out perform the Nvidia card, after all CrossfireX is a much more efficient scaling archtecture than SLI is, and if they used a similar way of implementation on this board, it should out perform the nVidia cards, at a price point margin. (The nVidia chips are better, but the don't play as well with each other as AMD's GPU's do.)

Finally "Spammage" is mostly correct, programs have to be written for multithreaded CPU's and most aren't in fact I have seen benchmarking results showing comperable dual and quad core systems compared, and the area where the quad core made itself stand out in the croud was in the area of video rendering (For me, a very important statistic, but for most people not so much). The majority of users, and gamers alike, don't really benifit as much as they think from multiproc systems (although having multiproc does lower the overhead on both CPU's--some).
