Sunnyvale (CA) – AMD has clarified its desktop processor introduction plans late Friday, following media reports that certain Phenom CPUs would be delayed.

According to information provided by AMD today, Phenom 9700 and 9900 processors are in fact delayed and are now expected to be introduced in the second quarter and not in the first. The company noted that this decision was made “based on OEM input”. As a result, AMD intends to “prioritize volume-based Phenom products”, which not only include the already launched Phenom 9500 and 9600, but also the triple-core versions of the CPU as well as lower-power (65 watt) 9000e models, which originally were scheduled for a second quarter introduction.

AMD spokesman Jake Whitman said that AMD’s “OEM customers are placing more priority on our energy-efficient and triple-core processors, where the volumes and ability to differentiate products take precedence over the more prestigious, but much lower volume, higher performance quad-core products.”

Once again, there is no delay

This makes total sense. AMD probably had the tradeoff to make: higher frequencies or lower power. Classic chip tradeoff. With the 2.3BE overclockable to 2.8/2.9, they have the enthusiasts covered, and with the big customers more concerned with cool designs and form factors, this makes total sense.

New stepping when?

I'm eager to build a Phenom based machine, but I won't do it until the B2 stepping is out. Buggy processors are not nice, as I got bit once by Intel bugs. Seems I could build a high/mid-range machine with an awesome bang for the buck going full AMD this go around. It's gonna be nice! :)

Black Editions!!!!

My only concern is the Black Edition. These are usually released after the initial launch looses its flair, i hope this does not stay the trend. They need to Release Black edition processors with the initial release with a higher price not the equivalent price in the case of the 9600 Phenom. I have always been an AMD fan-boy and look forward to them being on the top again soon. Lets just hope that they also give ATI its deserved justice and give a respectable card to halt Nvidia's monopoly.
