Tokyo (Japan) – Sony has released the firmware v2.10a update for the Playstation 3, which improves the video feature set of the game console. The PSP also received an update and can now stream Internet radio content.

The firmware update has become available to Playstation 3 users today and introduces support for what Sony calls a “much-requested” video playback format today. DivX and WMV (VC-1) videos can now played through the PS3’s XMB. Also included in this update is the Blu-ray Profile 1.1, which adds HD picture-in-picture capability.

Sony said that the 2.10a update also comes with a voice changer feature, enabling gamers to change the tone of your voice during voice or video chat.

There aren’t many BD 1.1 movies on the market today – the first commercial video was released on December 10 in Germany (“Neues vom Wixxer”). Home users interested in creating BD 1.1 videos can take advantage of the PiP capability through packages such as Corel’s WinDVD.

At this time, the DivX playback capability of the PS3 does not include “full” DivX certification, which means that the game console has not undergone “rigorous testing program” of DivX. However, DivX said that the PS3 is expected to receive a DivX qualification “in the future”.

In the meantime, the Playstation Portable’s firmware was update to version 3.80, which now includes Internet Radio support. Sony says that PSP owners can now access “thousands of stations” via a Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Please Sony birng Divx for the PSP!!

This article is wrong. I own a PS3 and in the "about Playstation 3" thing in "system settings" says that the PS3 is DivX certified. Sorry Xbox fanboys - Sony beat you here....

No it's sorry Sony fan boy. Xbox added DivX support on Dec 3 rd and is DivX certified. BTW I own all 3 consoles so save it.

And how long did it take XBOX 360 to add DIVX? 2 years? PS3 One year. So even though MS beat sony to DIVX support this year, it still took sony 1 year less to add it.

The PS3 had DIVX on the drawing board before MS had it for the Xbox, and i remember ppl form MS saying that the xbox might not even get Divx. So really, the xbox only got it cuz ps3 was going to get it, but sony had made the *mistake* of telling everyone theyd have it for the Dec update, so MS took advantage of the moment and bundled it into their update, which was scheduled just before sony's periodic PS3 update. Really, im just glad we have it :)

to convert your moofies and home clips to your psp. psp can play h264 stuff so generally i encode to that at a half resonable quality, but small enough to have a full boxset season of futurama on memory stick :)

I was at Walmart the other night. In the electronics department they had a demo 360 with a red blinking ring. I told the Walmart worker that there display system had the RROD. They asked what that was and I told them about the heat failure scandal and let them know that turning it off might be a good idea (Displaying broken equipment is bad marketing). They told me that messing with the 360 was the managers job. If someone working for me said that, they would be very lucky not to be fired.

The PS3 VS 360 argument is just a waste. The Wii is kicking both of those systems right in the nads. I own a PS3 and a Wii, so I've room to talk. I'd still have a 360 if it hadn't died...THREE TIMES!!! At least Sony and Nintendo can produce a product that works reliably. Then again, when the original Playstation came out, three of them overheated and died before I got one that worked. But then the store I bought it at was happy to exchange. Not so with the 360. I had to call my credit card company to get a refund on my 360. I guess my point is, Microsoft isn't doing so well... The Zune has had issues since the day of release, Vista is really nothing more than a bloated, problematic, overpriced piece of eyecandy[Vista has no advantage over XP] and the 360 has been plagued by so many issues that people aren't willing to take a $400 risk. Divx is a non-issue with anyone but us geeks. And I prefer Xvid anyway...

Who is Clueless??? Obviously it's you, you bought a Wii because you want to play Mario #67. Seriously only teens and 6 year olds play on a Mario machine. The Wii is so limited that it can't even play a DVD or Music Cd. Mario and little children stay together, the rest of the World Progresses.
