A market estimate released by Jon Peddie Research (JPR) suggests that the workstation market is continuing to post solid gains, both in terms of shipment and sales volume. According to JPR, 762,200 workstations were shipped in the third quarter of this year, up 23% from 618,900 units in Q3 2006. Revenues jumped 18% from $1.51 billion to $1.78 billion in the same time frame.

99% of all workstations shipped in Q3 2007 were built on x86 architecture running Windows or Linux, JPR said.

Workstation graphics also showed solid growth and broke the 1 million unit barrier for the first time. JPR estimates that unit growth was up 33% year-over-year. Shipments ended up at about 1.1 million cards during Q3 2007, raking in $338 million of revenue, mainly for AMD and Nvidia. According to the market research firm, Nvidia currently holds an 86% share in the workstation graphics market.
