Redmond (WA) - Nintendo says this year's Thanksgiving weekend set a new sales record for the DS, pushing the portable system's total sales to over six million in North America this year alone.

That's more than twice the sales number of Sony's PSP devices in the same time period.  The impressive sales number means a DS has been sold, on average, once every five seconds in North America.

According to sales data reported by the video game giant, Nintendo says that over 650,000 DS units were sold in the continent during the second-to-last week in November.  The company says that's a new internal record.

Since its launch in 2004, the DS has sold more than 35 million units worldwide, compared to the PSP's 25 million.  In the US alone, total DS sales stand at over 15 million.

Nintendo also said that four DS games have sold over two million copies just in the United States, which is more than any other current-gen console.  Those games are New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Diamond, and Super Mario 64 DS.
