Earlier this year, AMD announced a report by energy efficiency expert, Dr. Jonathan Koomey, wherein it was announced the global energy consumption for worldwide datacenters was $7.2 billion dollars annually in 2005.  This included $2.7 billion dollars in cooling and auxiliary equipment alone.

AMD's next phase of that report will be published on Wednesday.  It will include more targeted details and a breakdown of the energy findings, including trends.

Yes, DataCenters use lots of power. Yes, energy efficiency is critical for DataCenters. Gravity makes things fall. Get back to making better Processors.

I agree EE is important, but it should only be focused as a bonus. There are lots of components inside a computer that will affect your power consumption. A EE cpu with tons of power hungry HDDs... I wonder how much impact to chip sales the report will serve...

As amd is now a platform vendor and the vast majority of juice on servers is the cpu chipset (not too often much of gfx cards) its a pretty relevant consideration. Power consumption is part of total opperating overhead. Reducing that reduces a bottom line. End of story. If you have a complete platform that is comparatively more energy efficient than a competitors complete platform it is an advantage. How big remains up to the company. But it would be dumb not to push for any positive angle you can.
