Internet connectivity and interactive menues doesn't matter. It boils down to price and what movies any given format has.

People are comfortable with their DVD's right now and I'm sure DVD player sales completely dwarf any of the Hi Def formats.

I know that HD-DVD requires an internet connection, but does that mean if your internet goes down you won't be able to watch movies? Is there any sort of redundancy built in (IE does it just have to "check in" every now and then, or is it a "you want to play a movie, you have to ask the internet first").

Because when the internet goes down, that's exactly when I want to watch a movie.

Again, it was all about the PS3. I saw a black friday sale where you buy a PS3 and get 10 free BD movies! I'm sure that helped.

Nobody gives a toss about interactivity. BluRay has a bigger capacity, there are millions more players and more studio support. The only thing HD-DVD has going for it is price but that isn't working. The PS3 is going to win this format war for BluRay even if a lot of people buying it aren't buying it for the BluRay player. They still own it and there household will therefore chose BluRay.

HD-DVD recently made a big fuss out of nearly having sold 750k players worldwide since the beginning of 2006 but thats pathetic. Sony have just sold 183k PS3's in Japan in one month and have almost certainly topped 500k worldwide for November. Just with the PS3 alone they have 6.4m BluRay players in homes worldwide.

I'm old enough to remember VHS versus betamax. Betamax was technologically superior in many respects, and continued to be used by broadcast media long after it disappeared from the consumer market. As Yogi Berra said, looks like deja vu all over again.

Inr esponse to Kellen, internet is not required to use a HD DVD player, it is only needed for some of the extra features on the HD DVDs. Just as the different Blu Ray features on the newer profiles doesn't mean newer Blu Ray discs won't work, just that some of the newer extra features won't.

HDDVD doesnt need internet to play movies. Infact AACS is not even mandatory on HDDVD, unlike BR which is further crippled by BD .

The VHS/Betamax comparison is valid, but unfortunately this time around HD DVD appears to be Betamax. They've alienated all other manufacturers with their bargain basement players - Onkyo has reportedly canned their HD DVD player since they can't sell it at a profit, and the only other manufacturer (Venturer) is selling a slightly re-engineered Toshiba player, for the same price. They've got the weakest studio support. They've got the weakest installed base, and consequently the weakest media sales by some margin. What HD DVD has going for it is interactive features and cheap hardware - the buying public seem to be throwing Z Z Z z z z at the former, and although the latter has resulted in increased hardware sales, it hasn't as yet translated to media sales. That makes sense - someone who's had to wait for players to drop to $100-200 is unlikely to shell out $25 a movie too often.

I really think Christmas is going to be a watershed for this "war", and it seems to me that HD DVD is the one that needs to do all the running if it wants to be on the right side.

only difference now is that almost every single CE company in the world is behind BD and only Toshiba is behind HD. Samsung and LG are making dual-format players (samsung is a supporter of BD but doesn't want to give up on the little pie of HD) but they aren't selling as their price right now is just astronomical.
The timed exclusivity bought by the HD-DVD camp of Paramount, Universal and Dreamworks once that's over it would interesting to see if they, or any, sign on again. If the studios in question feel that BD is winning without them and decide not to resign with HD then HD-DVD is done. If they do re-sign then this war is just not going anywhere and we're going to end up with two formats and dual format players will rule.

I just cannot see BD losing at this stage; it's either going to be a stalemate or a win for them.

Blu-Ray is nothing more than a PS3 movie format at this point. Blu-Ray goes down with PS3, and PS3 is indeed going down in gaming world, considered to be the biggest flop since Sega Saturn.

On the other hand, Chinese HD-DVD player prices are scheduled to fall to $99~149 next year, and start replacing DVD upscalers.

The first sentence is about Discs, the second is about players. Especially since its black friday people are going to take advantage of deals. The deals are on the player not on the disc. Since you are only looking at 1 week of sales it will be some time before you see sales of HD DVD discs reflective of their recent player sales.

Its no wonder Blu-ray Discs sold more, they have something over 6 million players when you include PS3. Sony just needs to make sure that Blu-Ray doesn't turn into a PS3 movie format since 95% of the players are PS3's.

The 2 to 1 ratio we've heard is definitive enough and the 72% to 28% pretty much seals it.

Bluray is better where it matters the most. Picture quality, Sound quality, Data Storage capasity, Manufacturer and Studio Support. Aside from being 1080p/24 Bluray movies are encoded at a much higher bit rate, (22 to 48 mbp/s) and PCM suround sound, and many more Audio langages and sub title langages. Like music the higher the bit rate the better the picture quality. Most posple don't understand this fact about digital yet when they buy a digital camera they consider how many mega pixals the camera is which translates directly to magabits. The more mage bits the higher the Mega pixal count. It's the same with video. You can have 1080p resolution and have a releally low bitrate and the picture with be shit. The higher the bit rate the more information is on the screen like the number of colours and shades.

Java is the biggest kludgey (sic) piece of crap ever! Working in IT we have to have 5 different flavors of JRE just to get all of our vendors apps working. This one needs 1.5, this one needs 1.4, this one also needs 1.5 but won't work with anything but 1.5_10. Next time your watching a bluray movie encoded with AVC watch the bit rate counter and you will see for yourself that the same movie on HD DVD has a much lower bit rate count. Thats why HD DVD movies look a bit funny to anyone used to watching blu-ray movies. The bit rate is actually even more important than the resolution. HD DVD is only capable of 36 mbp/s and Blu-ray is capable of 54 mbp/s. I saw Transformers on HD DVD and I thought that Siderman ate it for breakfast in terms of picture quality. I watched the movie cars last night and the bit rate went up to 48 mbp/s and the picture quality was mind bogoling good. Even if HD DVD started using AVC instead of VC1, they would not be able to create or repoduce the same quality at only 36mbp/s. This is why studio's like disney and Director's Like spealberg don't want to put out their movies on HD DVD. Bottom line, it's infearior. I understand that many people want to save a hundred dollars on a player because to them it's good enough, but that dosen't negate the fact that a lot of people want more and are willing to pay a slight perium to get Blu-ray.

Your not being told that the people buying the cheap HD DVD players are buying it to up-convert their DVD collection, or to use it as a good cheap DVD player. These people have no intention of paying up-wards of $40.00 for a movie. They saw an opertunity to take advanage of the good low cost Player. This is the first time I think that the masses are the early adopters. Every time before it has only been people with money to blow on such products, or people who were allready use to technology who bought set-tops this early in the game. Now any McDonalds employee can afford an HDDVD player (though not the movies or the screen), and they are buying them because it is cool to be on the cutting edge, not because they can afford all the stuff to go with it, and not because they know anything about the format war. And now either 2 things will happen. The masses of people buying these things will get burned and learn why it is the 'cutting' edge, or (as things seem to go) these McDonalds employees will get better jobs in a year or two, or major raises, and will become the people who will be buying the movies. If that happens before HDDVD forum gives up then it may stick arround just yet.

One last point, of all the people who watch movies now we need to remember that either forum only needs a fraction of that market to grow a profit. In the PC worls alone there is apple as a stellar example. Apple is hopeing to get 10% of the PC market in the next year or so. Yet, even with such a tiny market they have lasted for years (and done well at times including now). I think it's fair to say that more people have a video player of one form or annother, than have a computer, so HDDVD dosnt need much to stay in business.
The problem for us late adapters is that if one dosnt die, and there are still good movies that are only on one format, then we have to get a more expensive 2format player, or 2 crappy players (or finally have the motivation to build that HTPC). I hope one looses (and I hope it's microsoft lol), but it dosnt really matter which one.

BluRay is a superior technology in many ways. Even if it goes away for movies; it will not go away for computer use. How many HDDVD burners are available for PC? None you say? Then I'll just have to keep backing up to my 50GB dual layer (100GB quad layers soon) BluRay burners then.

The statement on bitrate is crap. You can get high quality 1080 content even at relatively low bitrates. 20mbps should be enough for 1080p. 54mbps is an overkill.

[Full 1080p requires about 250 MB/s of video bandwidth. Depending on action, a 20 Mbps stream may not provide enough detail for the 250 MB/s output. Neither will 50 Mbps. -Rick]

Check out how AVC (which is a part of WMV 9 codec suite, I think) at 9600kbps handles 1920x1080/24 (progressive). It has some artifacts but the movie fits on a normal DVD. H.264 could perhaps do even better job.

There is a big difference if you have a good 1080p LCD or plazma TV. The bit rate is much high on blu-ray when they encode using AVC. There is also so uncompressed PCM sound tracks on most disc's which is also much better. There is also more souround sound tacks in differenet langages. All things peopel care about. I personnally don't care about the extra's as most are just crap. You need to get your head out of your ass.

Something funny. It's not like anyone is buying those HD DVD movies. Most cost more than the Blu-ray movie's, so think again who is getting sucked in. If one hundred dollars is so important for you to save what makes you think they will spend $40.00 on a movie, especially when the technoloy is out dated.

I agree with your comment. people who pay for a low end Hd player are not going to buy movies, but they will rent movies (look at the Neflix #'s). whoever gets movies down to $20 reg. everyday price will not only win the format war, but have a good shot at overcoming standard DVD. That said, HD DVD is cheaper to make, so if toshiba convinces studios to follow their player price cuts, with movie price cuts, they stand a good chance at winning. With the losses they take on every PS3 sold, and the higher cost of movie production, i don't think sony could match prices with toshiba

A higher bit rate didn't help out Fifth Element on Blu-ray, did it? Remember that one? It was so bad that they remastered it and let people trade them in for free. Bit rate is useless. It's all in the compression. I have both at home, hooked up to the same TV, and my wife who is not at all technology-literate says she prefers HD DVD to Blu-ray. But this is just the old Xbox vs. Playstation debate all over again, just with different names. Fanboys suck. Pick the one that you want and just shut up about it. Blu-ray is definitely going to win. It's been outselling HD-DUD on a weekly basis for a while now. It has over 70% sales in Europe, 9:1 lead in Japan. Better studio support, better CE support, better software sales, better marketshare. The proof is in your face and the general mass have made up their minds. Blu-ray is superior and it is winning - accept it!

I doubt anyone could hear the difference between AC3@384kbps and PCM in that holywood sound fx mess. It just blows out the windows no matter what compression is used.

In the end, all that matters is how a producer handles the medium, not which medium he uses. You may even get a BD stuffed up with useless crap so that the movie has to have lower bitrate (and DTS audio) and you may get a HDDVD version without the crap and have even higher video bitrate. This choice is not made by you, in the first place.

There are so many posting places for this I feel Deja Vu all over again.

Bit rate is a pointless measure of quality. Since there are a variety of Codecs. BD has used MPEG2 heavily and almost all HD-DVD are VC-1. Quality of the Codec is more important than bit rate. Same goes for Audio. While PCM is nice, TrueHD may be just as good to the human ear. I still think that DD and DTS are just fine.

Let's see, how many people have 7.1 system that can decode HD audio?

How many people have 1080p HDTVs?

How many people can recognize the difference between HD-DVD and BD in a double blind study?

The answer to all of these is very few. The market is just beginning and once a quality threshold is surpassed, the mass market doesn't care about any additional benefit. There may be some marketing mumbo jumbo, but in the end the price will decide.

IMHO the difference between 720p and 1080p is not noticeable on a TV under at least 50". In fact, most people don't even realize that their 1080i signal is being de-interlaced and down converted to 720p anyway.

What I see as disadvantages of BD are the DRM (they can see information on your system, so I will definitely not be putting BD on my computer). Region Coding (which is pointless since HD is a global digital standard). Sony being behind it (if they put a root kit on CDs what will they do with BD? See first reason).

All this back and forth over formats is nothing but misinformation and vieled attacks from PS3/XBOX fanboys. Real consumers buy both formats regardless of what game system supports them. Blue-Ray seems to be establishing itself..it had alot of marketing behind it from the start. HD-DVD is going to have to keep lowering prices..even the media to keep up. I still only buy DVD myself.

CJ, I'm not an owner of either gaming system. I use a PC for my games and a lot of other things, to boot.

I do not want to buy both formats. That's twice the cost for the same thing. I want one format and that's it.

I admit, I'm not a fan of Sony, but I still buy their products if they have a good one at a good price. I don't however, by their over-hyped technology that is cost way more than any value added (e.g. WEGA).

The crux of this argument for me is that I don't want to have to worry about a root kit in my movie, my computer or movie-player sending my viewing habits (or more) back to the mother ship, or whether or not I can trade/sell/buy movies from friends (and just other people in general) in other regions of the world.

Sony, Disney and several other companies just seem to want to do everything I don't like.

The quality of both is great if you ask me. And, right now, I'll be happy with DVD until one of these guys drops out or there is a dual format player for under $150. But I really don't want the latter, I just want one format.

After reading up on BD , though, and considering Sony's past history on the CD front, I can tell you that I will never put a BD drive in my computer. At least not to watch movies or read any disc that I didn't create myself.

Microsoft screwed the format as soon it came out with the XBOX360 without HD-DVD playback. And then they ask you buy an attachment for the the system just so you can play those movies. HD-DVD would've won the war a long time ago if Microsoft put it in the XBOX360.

At the time (2005), it didn't make sense for M$ to put an HD-DVD player in the XBOX360. The cost was one thing but the drive speed (data rate) was another problem. The 12x DVD player in the 360 has a faster data rate than both the 1x/2x Blu-Ray drive in PS3 and the 1x or 2x 360 HD-DVD player add-on.

The thing is, just like DVD drives increased drive speed over time (1x/2x/4x/8x/12x/16x/Xx) so should Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drives. (That opens up the possibility of a future add-in, but most likely it won't happen until the next generation.) Too bad M$ keeps the price their hardware and peripherals so high, and blames it on the stockholders/investors.

M$ has Core, Premium, HALO, and Elite systems; the only difference between them is are neglible cosmetic changes and OVERPRICED Hard drives. Seriously, what the hell is "elite" about the Elite? The price? A charcoal grey dye job (it's not even black; rather disappointing and it takes a while to get used to)? The "Elite" is elite in name only.

The Elite CPU and GPU should be 65nm RIGHT NOW, the cooling system should be top-notch, the drive should be QUIET (I have one, and I think it's significantly louder than my Premium), multi-format audio/video playback supported, and the 120GB HDD stays put. A discount voucher for the HD-DVD add-on would be a nice gesture.

The 360 MUST receive a meaningful drop in price before Fall 2008. The original XBOX dropped $100 (from $299 to $199) by Fall 2002 and XBOX LIVE. It would have been interesting if M$ could have put the HD-DVD drive in 360 from the start; this would be a VERY different format war, if any war at all. Putting a HD-DVD player in the Elite right now is kind of rolling the dice -- that's why they keep it separate.

There has been ONLY 2.7 million Blu-ray players sold, vice 750K HD players...so that's 3 times the amount. As HD players start outselling Blu Ray, and start matching PS3 sales...Here's a little bit of math 2.7 million to 750K...looks like a big deal, but 57 million to 55 million isn't, and HD Players are outselling Blu ray in a major way, and I doubt PS3 maintains it's sales push.

These numbers are not being reported in the proper context of the current situation on the ground. Blue ray has a LARGER install base currently, with millions of PS3 owners, whereas HD-DVD is taking a different tack, by going straight to the consumer with ther tradition stand-alone player.

The critical number to evaluate will be the sale of HD-DVD players/Xbox player compared to sales of PS3/BD Player...not sales of disc, because PS3 has a lead, but nothing insurmountable, by any stretch of anybodies imagination.

HD-DVD also is offering very very attractive promotions when you buy a new player, so WHY would a new buyer go out an buy ALOT of disc. BTW, the selection isn't all that great for either format, and given that you get 7-8 disc for free...you're probably not then going to buy 3 or 4 more, but here's the key...you'll commit to a format, by what DISC PLAYER you buy.

So looking at these numbers, it only confirms that HD-DVD players are gaining ground, and BD is losing some...Let's wait and see how many players sell over the holiday season, and I'm pretty confident the sales of HD-Players will match BD players, which will be REALLY bad news for Sony. Fox will bolt the exclusive camp, and Disney will follow by spring, leaving BD in alot of trouble...mark my words!

Lets start with the whole picture quality being better on one or other...pure crap. I've ran side by sides on samsung 71 series, you can't tell the difference, bit rate or whatever, difference is so small our eye's cant descern it.

Capacities: Sure BD has 50 gig, and the new HDDVD's 45 gigs, but factor in the more difficulty and space required to code a BD and the difference is negligable.

Price: Clearly HD had the advantage here, you can thank Sony for that.

Numbers Sold: One thing sony accidently did right. They put Blu-ray players in the PS3 so their games would look better, turns out that hasn't mattered worth crap, and even though a console fails, 1.7 mil sold stateside helps their player cause.(Though lets see how many get returned the day after xmas because people don't know they can't play their old games on cheap model).

Samsung going neutral and offering a multiplayer here in a couple weeks is an interesting indicator that the differences between the two are so minimal its a completely pointless war. I think were just going to start seing more multiplayers and then it wont matter honestly.

Um, what gave you the idea that the console has failed? Sure, the PS3 is outsold by Xbox here in the states, and by the Wii everywhere, but we are nowhere NEAR done with this generation to declare the PS3 a failure. With 5.3 M units sold world-wide as of Sep 07, I'd call that a success, especially when you compare that number to previous generation's adoption rates. Xbox1, Gamecube, and even PS2 took far longer to ship their first 5 million than PS3.

And, I hate to point this out, but most people know the low-end PS3 can't play PS2 games. Just like most people know the low-end Xbox360 has no hard drive, no wireless internet, and YOU GUESSED IT..no backwards compatibility unless you purchase a hard drive.

BD does not contain any root kits its just an extension of the existing encryption technology and has already been cracked and all pcs users can dump both types of discs. ACCS and BD were poor attempts to try to stop the failures of the DVD encryption scheme.
