The Xbox 360 dropped from 200 watts to 150 watts if you got the 65nm version.

The PS3 still consumes about as much power as the two combined now.

its not just about electricity, it's also about the materials used in manufacturing and the packaging as well. I alway see recyclable material used in sony products and packaging. probally atleast 20% of products are made from recyclable material.

The only reason for this rating is Greenpeace wanted information that Nintendo didn't give them. Gotta love these Greenfreek people. Loved being in the Navy and getting to blast them off their boats with fire hoses when they tried to get in the way.

Greenpeace gave Nintendo a 0 for not listing any of their environmental policies. What kind of crap is that. Maybe Greenpeace needs to do some research of Japanese environmental electronic laws because if the Wii didn't meet their laws then it wouldn't be sold in Japan or the EU which both have much stricter electronic environmental laws then the U.S. Greenpeace is wasting electricity posting that article on their website. Maybe Greenpeace should shutdown their web servers and save some electricity.

The consumer market is rapidly changing. More and more consumers want products that (at the very least) have the appearance of being environmentally friendly. People may just go on "hippie bashing", but the fact that Nintendo doesn't release its environmental policies is a big mistake. For example, Toyota has long made its environmental policies a big selling point--even before the green movement. Consumers looking for these sorts of companies moved to Toyota just because of the positive information they made available. Greenpeace is providing a tool for consumers to then take and evaluate with company material to make their own decisions. If Nintendo doesn't provide that information, then more power to Greenpeace. They should make consumers aware of it! Nintendo should come out and tell the world how little power the Wii consumes, and how most of its packaging can be recycled.

Now I will go play my Wii as well. :P

I was actually wanting a Wii, but if Nintendo is that irresponsible to the environment, I guess I'll have to pass till they change. It's too bad really, wish they'd shape up.

I see there are some jokes above, hehe, but I actually use this information to live responsibly the same way I use consumer reports, or information on toys.

Part of being safe and responsible is knowing I am ensuring safety and responsibility for the people making these, and the land where they are making it.

I feel that if I want to be happy, I have to feel I DESERVE to be happy - and as such, I live very responsibly. So my plans to get a Wii for the family over Xmas gotta go - looks like I'll be supporting Sony or M$??? lol, that'll be a first.

Most Consumers don't necessarily want green products. There is a niche in the market that has recently been deemed significant to the Marketing guys in the consumer products arena. These people at least want lip-service paid to being "green". They are not the major and dominant demographic. However, where money is to be made, it will be made.

That said, some people want "green" game consoles, some want great graphics, some want Cherry Garcia ice cream.

But Wiis, on-board graphics and store brand vanilla ice cream run circles around them.

I don't think that the Wii will suffer from this at all.

Okay, first of all: the Nintendo Wii uses a fraction of the power used by the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3. The only reason Greenpeace put them at the bottom is because Nintendo refused to release their policies and practices.

So basically, Greenpeace called up Nintendo and said "hey, can we have all the information regarding the policies and practices of your company?" And Nintendo was like "hell noes, that information is private and none of your business!" So Greenpeace gave them a zero score on their little chart.

Of course, nobody bothers to do any research, so we get stupid articles like this that give the false information that Nintendo is not "green." When, in reality, it should just say "not enough information to calculate."

It would be similar if someone asked a presidential candidate what his policies regarding child-raising were, and he said "no comment," and the person who asked turned around and released a study saying that candidate is a pedophile - because he refused to comment.

Here is the fundamental difference. In consumer guide when they don't have enough data yet on a product they say "Not enough information/data".

That is why you trust them, they give details and metrics based on infor and stats usually compiled over years in ideal scenarios (especially with cars).

If they instead turned around and for every product that they didn't have information on said "its terrible" how long would you rely on their opinion? Which is precisely what Greenpeace gave here.

The facts that WE DO KNOW speak the opposite. Wii uses less materials, less pacakaging and consumes a fraction of the power than competing products use.

This is one of but many scenarios where using your head would be beneficial over blindly listening to an extremeist group's point of view...

What does Nintendo do to help protect the environment?

Nintendo is very concerned with doing our part to help preserve the environment. We're always researching new products and procedures to make our products and operations as environmental-friendly as possible.

Some things Nintendo is already doing:

In our offices:
* We recycle the paper we use company-wide.
* We limit our use of colored paper, since it's not easily recycled.
* We purchase recycled paper towels, report covers, message pads, and writing pads.
* We currently recycle more than 70% of the waste that is generated at our headquarters.
* We actively promote the recycling of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass in our corporate cafeterias.

In our products:
* We use at least 80% recycled paper in all of our shipping packaging.
* We don't use Styrofoam in any of our packaging.
* Many of our instruction manuals are printed on recycled paper.
* Our clamshell packaging is recyclable and most recycling centers accept it.
* We require that manufacturers not use any banned substances (such as lead, mercury, etc.) in components, nor use them in the manufacturing process for any components used inside of our products. This requirement also extends to suppliers of packaging, marketing materials, and other items used in the marketing and distribution of our products.


Add that to any of the other information we already know about the Wii etc.

In a nutshell Nintendo doesn't license others to use their information. Greenpeace didn't like that. The reality is that they provide a reasonable amount in their practices alone.

Greenpeace can suck it if they are crabbing because nintendo didn't hand finished processed information to them on a friggin patter. Greenpeace clearly don't want to step up to the plate and do actual research...which is what they are paid for.

Thus they get a zero on a scale of 1 to 10 for:
A) Intentionally completely misrepresenting a situation
B) Failing to follow through and do actual research
C) Getting paid other people's money to do such a slapshod job.

If there was a console at about the same price as the wii, that had about the same function (wiimote..)
and the same games, but was made by a company that was more eco-friendly, then maybe I would buy their console instead of Nintendos...

That might be true if the article was ranking companies on "greeness" however this article is about which companies are more likely to go green first. Basically what the idiots at greenpeace are saying is that nintendo will never go green because they don't release information about thier practices. To put that in a toms perspective, that would be like an article saying that the AMD Phenom destroys the Penryns line because intel didn't release their processor speeds.

Well, just because a company refuses to release their private policies and practices, that does not necessarily mean their practices are bad. In any case, we do not know the circumstances, just that Greenpeace had no information about Nintendo. Maybe they didn't do enough research. Maybe they never even contacted Nintendo. Maybe they spoke to someone who forgot to give the message to their boss. The point is that we do not know, and Greenpeace defacing Nintendo based on the fact that they do not have information is the equivalent of libel.

I agree, in large part, with your statements! I think it is hilarious that Nintendo designed their consoles (DS and Wii) around power efficiency, they have expanded gaming into a realm where you can use learning software like the new memory games, vision exercise software, virtual pets, and all sorts of other creative ideas, all while still keeping their main franchises in check, and green peace has somehow brought these claims against them? I don't give a flying flip about green peace to begin with, but this really makes me chuckle! If the Wii takes 1/10 of the power that it takes to run an Xbox360 (lets not even consider the coal-burning PS3), that means that I hour of playing Wii is equal to 10 hours of playing XBox360... That's alots o' electricity spent folks. So while Green Peace salutes Sony for making the 380 watt powered PS3 and slams Nintendo for making the cost effective and creative 20 watt Wii, we all begin to realize that the Green Peace are for the most part (or in most cases that make headlines) a discredited organization. I cannot believe what I see/hear happening here! In this forum are people striking at Greenpeace for giving Nintendo a zero because Nintendo wouldn't relinquish information to them about their 'green' practices. Some of you prefer to side with Nintendo because somehow you think/heard of/learned from someone else/etc... that Nintendo is not at fault here. Why don't you just sit and think a moment - please use those brain cells just a bit...why would Nintendo, or ANY corporation, not divulge their 'green' practices to Greenpeace'? Before you can get hired you have to sign a paper that says the company you're about to be employed at will perform a background check before they can hire you, but instead you tell them you won't sign that form. So the company decides not to hire you and hires someone else who did sign the background check form. Then you call and complain to the company manager that they should have hired you because you have a clean background with not so much as a parking ticket and you are essentially a good citizen. --
OK, here is a better one - the U.N. demands that Iran allow U.N. nuclear inspectors to enter the country and check to see if there are any nuclear weapons being developed. Iran says NO. I know there will be some readers that will disregard my previous post as 'not the same thing' or accuse me of 'twisting words around' - I ask only that you refer to history. Many of us would like to think that some of the more horrendous moments in history could not 'happen to us' or 'happen in this day and age'. Think of the Salem witch hunts of the 17th-century. Better yet, Nazi Germany. History is full of this kind of false-information mob mentality and I see it here. First of all, those siding with Nintendo - how could you listen to them when Greenpeace, the biggest organization in the world created to inform everyone about corporate and government atrocities to our environment, tells you that Nintendo rates a zero because they refuse to divulge information that would otherwise give them a higher score? And for those of you that think you've heard something negative about Greenpeace's record, don't let it allow you to lose your sight of the reason for their existence - unverified stories (rumors, propaganda, myths, urban legends, somebody said..., etc...) are another way to get you to believe something false. I'm sure everyone on this board isn't squeaky clean, but even if you were a convicted felon and you were to tell me that you knew the person sitting next to me is a terrorist and he is wearing a bomb, and the person next to me admits to being a terrorist but says he is not wearing a bomb, I would probably listen to you and get up and walk away quite quickly.

As others have said, if you don't have enough information, you should put "Not enough Info" in your study. The 0 was just their attempt to bully companies like Nintendo into giving information next time. Frankly, it borders on libel.

I wouldn't give them info if I had a company. When the best score anyone gets is a 7, it makes everyone look bad. Maybe if there were the chance of a decent score like 8 or 9 it would be worth it.

Lot's of companies around the world make a serious effort to contribute to environmental stability including the one Im working for. Why can't a multi-billion dollar business with such a huge following of fans do it?

Has 6 year old technology in it that by now can fit in ur damn hand. Nintendo dosnt care. End of story. They have the most wildy sucessful console on the market in the history of the market. America is only one part of the globe, and greenpeace will only sway the tiniest fraction of people in that market. The rest of us know that Nintendo isnt a bad company (granted no company that large is a complete saint) and so when we see greenpeace give them a 0 we know that they are just trying to get attention.

I find it ironic that organizations such as Greenpeace spend valuable time and money researching things like this. Honestly, there are bigger fish to fry. I'm not an environmentalist at all, so it's hard for me to take any of this seriously, but consider this: China is bringing a new coal powered power plant online every two days. Not to mention that fact that China has very low quality coal with huge amounts of sulfur in it and they do nothing about it. In light of facts like this they release a report that says Nintendo of all companies is ruining our world! I haven't laughed this hard in a while.

This article has nothing to do with the Wii or PS3 or Xbox. The article is referring to the practices of the companies (all of which make far more products than just these three consoles). It doesn't matter if the Wii only consumes 20w of electricity if Nintendo is dumping toxic waste in the Yangtze (hypothetically). And for the person who commented on the Chinese power plants - those power plants are being built to supply electricity to factories that make products for the United States.
