Boise (ID) – Micron today announced that it will jump on the NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD) train. The first drives are expected to become available in the first quarter of 2008.

Micron said that it will be offering the SSDs for computing, enterprise server and networking applications under a newly created “RealSSD” brand. The disk drives will be introduced in 1.8” and 2.5” form factors and 32 GB and 64 GB capacities. All models will integrate a native SATA II interface as well as a single-chip four-channel controller supporting native command queuing, the company said.

The SSDs are sampling now and are scheduled to go into mass production in the first quarter of next year.

The RealSSD product line will also include embedded USB-based storage devices ranging from 1 GB to 8 GB to store an entire operating system within an industrial PC or blade server system. Micron said it is sampling these products now and expects mass production to begin by the end of 2007. The company will also offer the RealSSD Module, a low profile module storage device only 25 mm high, less than 4 mm thick and 133.5 mm long.

 “SSDs are becoming the new storage medium, fundamentally altering the way data is stored,” said Dean Klein, Micron vice president of memory system development, in a prepared statement. “The storage market is ripe for innovation, and it’s an opportunity Micron is embracing given our expertise in NAND.”

As a hardcore gamer, I am totally ready for super fast SSD featuring flash memory for storage! But dang this stuff ain't cheap. When can we expect even the 32gb drives to be "affordable" for the average citizens?

expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes. Ok, so 64GB isn't huge, but you only need 1 of these drives in your system. Use it for your OS and some programs. Then buy a 1TB drive for all your music/videos/photos/random crap. I think I might look into getting a SSD when I build my next computer.

Everyone wants faster boot up times

just stop turning off your pc's. You'll save more money dealing with no bootup times by NOT buying this and burning electricity, then buying this and booting up quicker. OS's on this is no real big deal. If instead you said "Swap drive on this" i would suddenly reconsider what you said and perhaps think that "yes" it would be a good idea. We have some pretty long load times on programs, so i'd place my adobe premiere/photoshop/etc cs3 junk on one, and a swap drive on the other with 8gb ram on a 64bit system and it would probably be worth it in time saved... although in a year time i could see 120-400gb models coming out... I was expecting these drives to give significantly longer battery life time too, but benchmarks suggest that its pretty small so far. but they are new, and efficiency probably can be found.

Until a SSD can reach double the performance of a RAID 0 pair of normal hard drives, I'm not spending my cash. Dual Drive?

One could use the SSD as the C:/boot drive and have the essential files/programs on it and use a HDD as the d:/storage drive. I have had two drives in my computer in the past. It can be done. The boot drive does not have to be big but only big enough for the operating system plus essential files/programs. One can install the other files and programs on the D: drive.

I believe the cost of SSD's will eventually come down. As more companies make them and there are ways to make them cheaper so they cost less. Competition drives prices down as well as developing technology.
