SMobile Systems says it has developed the first mobile security solution for handsets based on the Android SDK of the Open Handset Alliance.  Called “Security Shield”, the software includes antivirus, anti-spam and firewall applications.

SMobile plans on adapting the “remainder” of their applications to the Android platform “in the coming weeks and months”.

Additionally, SMobile said that it will be developing new security products tailored to Android to address potential security threats resulting from the fact that Android does not allow the user to decide whether an application can make phones calls, send text or multi-media messages or make connections to the Internet during normal device us.

According to SMobile, the current state of Android could allow a virus to “pose as an application and do things like dial phone numbers [and] send text messages”.
