Redmond (WA) - Mario's triumphant return to the home console scene gave the Wii its best first-week sales of any Wii title.

Super Mario Galaxy sold more than 500,000 copies in its first seven days on store shelves, according to internal sales figures reported by Nintendo.

Nintendo also noted that these numbers give Galaxy the distinction of having the highest first-week sales of any Mario game.  This is good news for Nintendo, as it had seriously banked on the title as its big holiday title.  Super Smash Bros Brawl, once also a hotly anticipated Christmas game, was pushed back to 2008 earlier this month.

Although Galaxy was Nintendo's most impressive game launch to date, it failed to come close to Microsoft's cash cow for the Xbox 360, Halo 3.  Released at the end of September, Halo 3 sold more than three million copies in its first week.
