If mario galaxy was marketed as much as Halo 3 was, and the Wii had been around as long as the xbox360. I suspect strongly that it would have sold just as well.

That said, its total sales over the next year vs. halo 3 may leave an interesting impression.

This is in no way a slam against Halo 3. I give massive props to the halo series for entwining a deep and well provided story for the series, especially if you read the books ment to fill the gap between games.

Pre halo1, between halo1 and 2, between halo2 and 3. The author does a wonderful job, they are sci fi full of excellent writing even if you are not a halo fan.

(just avoid the one book that is supposed to be durring halo 1, a different author wrote it and its pretty poor. Play the game instead its much better.)

wii is a system that I have said over and over again. Will sell well, but games wont. Why? because of all these 'new' gamers Wii fans claim are playing. And to some extent, there are new gamers, but those gamers will play Wii-sports, and probably wii-play since it comes with a controller and nothing more.

Still Mario looks like a game that almost makes the wii worth owning.

Compare that to PS3's marquee game Ratchet and Clank... critcal success but sales failure since release a month ago.

I have a Wii and have had since launch day. My wife and I just did most of our Christmas shopping this weekend. Over $300 in Wii games (6 of them) not Super Mario Galaxy. Looks good and all but it'll wait. We already own nearly as many Wii games as PS2 games and we've had the PS2 for more years than I can remember.

Sure, we play Wii sports a lot. It's damn fun. But our Wii (same goes for others we know who have one) is a lot more than "an appliance used to play wii sports and nothing more"

the controls are better then M64 but the camera isn't as controllable as I would like {some places you can't change the camera angle at all}.

Regardless, I prefer games that are fun over games that are just pretty, thought the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Microsoft latest ads trying to market the X360 as a family gaming system is pathetic, you see a flash of Guitar Hero 3 {which is on all three systems}, and one of Scene-It {which isn't really as fun as it should be}.

Mario did better than 500k.. unlike HALO which was release WORLDWIDE on the same day, Nintendo tends to release games in regions seperately...

IE Mario was released in Japan prior to US and EU. It sold 500k in the US in its first week here.. it sold more in its first week in JAP and first week in EU and First week in AU.


Now will it sell a total of 3 Million in its first week tallies everywhere... no, but Nintendo didn't spend the BILLIONS in hype that MS did, and it will have sold a hell of a lot more than 500k its first week.

Also unlike the 360 where Halo basically was it shooting its load and basically its swan song... The WII has tons of top teir titles coming, and will continue to sell 500K units a month for a long long time to come, while 360s drop back down to under 200k per month worldwide for the rest of its existence. Halo shot the 360s load, it cause a spike, and that spike will die off, and 3rd place world wide finish with about 25 Million total units sold is the 360s story.

Wii is well on its way to 80 to 100 Million units or more... the only question is will WII top PS2 sales... I suspect when all is said and done, it will.

Halo's an ok FPS... but that's all it is... an ok product with a ton of marketing $$ behind it. Mario is a great product with ok marketing behind it.... Mario is Game of the Year.

wii has a great opening week with minimal advertising and someone ridicules it because it didn't reach the amazing numbers of one of the most anticipated games that was shoved in people's faces by a huge marketing campaign, i.e. halo 3.
I mean after all, the sales after 1 week are all that matters, right? (please note sarcasm).

And maybe it won't ever match Halo 3 sales. Does that make it less of a great game? Of course not.


Also, I don't even want to reply to the "idea" (and i use that term loosely) that all people are using the wii for is for Wii sports.

Back to the point, Galaxy is a great game that provides more than enough incentive to purchase a console.

i didnt even bring the ps3 into the picture. what i'm saying is that given the hugh numbers of wii's sold. The overall game attach rate is low.

And what I am saying, is that just because you repeat a false statement, it does not become magically true. Do some research.

And once again, this is before the 75% increase in sales Mario Galaxy gave to Wii.

Last week (11/17)the Wii sold 2.2 million games.

So how is the "overall game attach rate low" It may not be the leader of the pack... but owners are playing a LOT more than just Wii Sports.

My kids now must settle for Galaxy this Christmas.

I play the heck out of my Xbox 360 and love it. I bought the Wii a while ago, but rarely touched it for anything other than the occasional bowling game with my daughter, who is 5. I read so many glowing reviews on Mario Galaxy that I figured it would be a good game to try with her.

Well, I play it all the time, even when she's not around! This is the first Mario game I find myself excitedly playing since Mario Bros. 2 many years ago.

I will keep playing games like this if they keep releasing games of this quality. I also do love it as the father of 3 children. We play it together and it's great.

I'm no Wii or Nintendo fanboy, but this is the one game on the system that has kept me coming back, which says a lot when I've enjoyed my 360 so much, which still gets most of the play time (after my PC).
