Having a blockbuster name like Phoenix Entertainment jumping on-board will make HD DVD unstoppable. Oh wait... who? Never mind...

Blu-Ray is and will continue to dominate the HD format war. It's good, however, that there are two formats cause it drives the costs for the end consumer down. Had there only been HD DVD or only Blu-Ray, the sh!t would surely cost a fortune.

Since they are known for 'campy gore fests', I would not think this would be a plus for HD.

The point behind this seemingly innocuous article is that the start up costs of HD-DVD recording and using the format for the recording side of the issue, as opposed to end-user is that HD-DVD is easier and cheaper. Something that Blu-Ray just can't seem to get right.

I am not sure why this is news, as I have never heard of the company myself, but Henrik is right, it's good to have to formats because consumers have more options and the prices continue to drop.

Please, keep your PS3 game egos out of news stories like this. You're just making people like myself lean towards the other format as opposed to blue ray.

I love how the BD fanboys keep saying BD has won when Sonys own head of entertainment said it is and will end as a stalemate. Google it if you don't believe me.

BTW I have both players so I don't really care who wins.

Has anyone actually ever seen or heard of a single movie this company has made. I can't even picture the logo. y is this article making a big deal out of this there nobodys, as far as i'm concerned hd-dvd can keep em, with blu-ray i'm fine with having, Sony Pictures, MGM, Buena Vista, Lionsgate, Fox and others. the only movie i'm annoyed that hd-dvd have got is serenity, but we still get firefly as blu-ray exclusive (how weird is that?, surely they could have come up with some sorrt of deal? to have the tv series and the film on both formats?)

HD-DVD versus the Blu... more choice? Yeah, how about we create a needlessly different type of car which requires all-new roads to be paved? More choice, right? I have a wild idea. How about they just do it right in one disc, the first time? DVD seemed to meed most people's video needs and few people complained about a lack of choice... rather they were glad there was a STANDARD.

And about having the competing players result in a price war... I don't buy it. Companies are going to compete to make cheap players even moreso if their products are more easily substitutable, because they know that the price sticker and not the Blu-ray sticker is going to be making the sale. Furthermore, having one standard will result in more of the same components being made (as opposed to an even split between HD-DVD and Blu-ray parts), and both components and players will benefit from being cheaper due to higher production volumes, because if there were only one HD format, people wouldn't wait for a clear winner, they'd have one, and thus purchase in greater numbers. Greater numbers, cheaper parts, no format war... I just don't see how you can possibly argue that spending more on your player and taking the risk that it might lose support (or at the very least, not get your favorite movie in high-def) is a better option.

Does anybody else including HD-DVD owners hate the HD-DVD promotion group?
I mean they first said that the ps3 should not be counted as a blu-ray player in hardware sales, which the blu-ray association agreed to despite the fact that the people who own a ps3 and use blu-ray make up the largest amount of blu-ray owners. Then the HD-DVD promotions group decide to show attach rate figures in which they included the ps3 so they showd bd with 0.7 and hd with 3.3, i mean did they actually think they could get away with that? i mean 0.7? do they expect people to believe that many people who have a blu-ray player that’s not a ps3 have no blu-ray movies? it boggles the mind.

I have a PS3 to cover blue ray and is going to buy a 100$ HD player when it comes down in price.
If blue ray ever losses...at worse you can use it for sony movies..which has a pretty huge library anyway...

Then again, I remember when I thought the same thing about Lions Gate and they've cranked out some decent stuff over the years.

How can Blu-Ray be better when all the movies are encoded in mpeg2? mpeg2 is old-school DVD format! HD-DVD's are all encoded in mpeg4 format which gives them 90% of the movies capacity of Blu-Ray. So the Blu-Ray "larger capacity" argument is null-and-void.

I've been looking into your claim and all the information I've turned up points to the conclusions that the MPEG-2 encoding on Blu-ray was a temporary limit in the original releases, which has been extended to incorporate both h.264 and VC-1 (Mpeg-4 formats).

Additionally, I checked out (blu-ray.com/movies) to see the release details of the movies released, and though you are right that many movies have been released under MPEG-2, it looks to result from the decsions made by the production company. I saw MPEG-4 and VC-1 movies supported around mid to late '06 by some firms while others seemed to join up around June of '07.

In conclusion, it seems that the larger capacity argument seems to be somewhat valid as based on your argument of encoding efficiency.
