New York (NY) – Sandisk announced a new NAND flash PCI Express card that is designed to hold operating system and frequently accessed files to speed up a PC.

The new “Vaulter” card comes with relatively modest capacities of either 8 GB or 16 GB and therefore is not suited to be used as a mass storage device. According to Sandisk, the device is designed to work in conjunction with a hard drive, which will hold the bulk of the data stored on a PC, while the Vaulter is used speed up the boot process of the operating system and applications.

The accelerator will not be offered through retailers, but is aimed at system builders who Sandisk hopes will use the device as an upgrade for their notebook and desktop PC systems.  The company did not say when the device will be available.

The idea of the Vaulter isn’t entirely new. In July of last year, Samsung announced a 2 GB and 4 GB solid state disk drive that was created to take advantage of Windows Vista’s ReadyBoost feature. The 2.5” drives never made it to the U.S. market.
