It's gone back and forth for a long time with Nvidia and ATI, so I wouldn't be surprised if things sway the other way. Nvidia may make the "fastest" GPU, but for alot of people it all comes down to Price/Performance, and if ATI can sell on that point alone than I think they will at least be able to make up for the lack of performance.

i was about to get an 8800GT but am waiting to the holidays when i have more time. the $200 range seems much more reasonable than the $280 the 8800GT now retail for.

I would not be worrying about Nvidia - they seem to be doing OK these days.

This is why competition is good for us consumers. Even though I am an Nvidia fan, I would probably buy ATI's newest cards if I had the money. Because competition is what keeps this industry from stagnating. Too bad I'm a student with no cash :(

I'm curious to see what happens. For consumers it just means better prices on better products. Cool.

Nvidia's supply issues might not be the greatest news for them, but I'd certainly like to see some benchmarks before making my purchase decision.

Before posting a very one-sided article, shouldn't you use actual benchmark results rather than "sources told us.....10%..."?

I'm looking forward to what AMD has to offer here, but if the cards suck, then much of the 250,000 units will be sitting on store shelves gathering dust....like their 2600 series and n's 8600 boards.

I guarantee most of those orders for the new AMD cards were made before people realized they can get a 8800GT. If they can't return it, then they'll ebay it!

The 8800GT was just what the midrange segment needed -- a real step forward in performance for less money. If AMD delivers, it could mean that the midrange market is finally back to a $200 level instead of $300, which will be a nice change.

Nvidia is purposely limiting supplies so it won't hurt its 8800GTS and 8800GTX money maker sales.

If DAAMIT finally plays its cards right, then maybe we'll start seeing some real competition again, which means more price wars and faster releases of new products. Even if it's only temporary, it'd be a nice change of pace, especially with the holidays coming up.

Just a few comments on your paid post here:

1. 40,000 units are WRONG.
2. You need to backup your statement and tell us who the other sources are. AMD has not even announced the Radeon HD series and you claim they fulfilled 250K units.
3. the price range is $179-239. If you are going to spread FUD, at least get your numbers right.
4. You need to backup your 10% slower or on par statement. According to benchmarks we have seen, the HD3850 is so bad, they had to compare it to 8600GTS. And the HD3870 scores 11K in 3Dmarks in the leaked benchmarks from AMD.

Just another in the series. TG Daily will either bash Intel or Fault NVidia. Why dont people realize that AMD is a sinking ship, and how much ever you wish, they are not going anywhere.

Even ATI will only be able to sell 400k cards. At $200 a pop that's only $80 million in sales. Seems kinda weak for this time of year.

If the article is true then AMD/ATI could pull off a major reverse for the holiday season. This is of course if the ATI boards stack up (By all reports they measure up well).ATI can really turn the screws if the drivers are good.
In the end it seems that Nvidia may have done what AMD is accustomed to doing; that is not suppling enough volume to satisfy the market.
I say all this guardedly; we do not know if this is a ploy by Nvidia and they will flood the market with GPUs by the end of November.

I'm happy for AMD tbh , good news anyways , i've seen some benchmarks of 3870 and it seems on par with 8800GT , and if it's a lower price then it's a win win for us, customers.

Yeah, first benches showing the 8800GT about 10% higher than the 3870 which I'm pretty sure isn't going to be priced 2/3 of the 8800GT. Some early pricing puts it at €249, that's a little higher than $350 for a base clocked model. Now I'm sure driver tweaks will improve performance but it looks like they may want to tweak that price. This article also fails to mention that several retailers are expecting a shipment of 8800GT's this week.

I think this is more indicative of Nvidia realizing that the 38xx cards were going to be good and cheap. So they pre-emptively created and released the 8800GT to steal some of ATI's thunder... which is why they don't have much volume.

You know how this market works... the fastest performers get all the attention, and this perception trickles down to the mainstream market.

Besides, everyone's still waiting for the benchmarks on the 3xxx cards.

I got a "back in stock" notice from newegg yesterday afternoon, but it was a couple of hours before I checked on the card(XFX). When I first clicked on the link it showed in stock, but by the time I checked the rest of the 8800gt cards and went back the xfx card was out of stock again! Tiger Direct doesn't even show if it's in stock, just states "usually ships within 7 to 10 days". ZipZoomFly out of everything. I will certainly be checking out the hd3800's. If they can deliver for $200 the 8800gt's will become available-and at a lower price.

AMD isnt a sinking ship there prosesser layout is still suprior to intels all they got to do is get them to a lower manufacturing tech and they will be on top again TG Dailys articals arnt pro one and down with the other they tell it how it is so get used to it.

But who will buy them now? NVIDIA undercut their own sales by introducing a product thats not even available in reasonable amounts. I am one of the not-so-happy people who just shelled out 400 $CAN on a 96 SP 8800 GTS 640. Live and learn, I guess.

I used to work for one of Nv's subcon. Still have friends there. The number of G92 that are churning out is way above the 40k quoted here. Yield is very good too. If you think about it, do you think AMD has more leverage on TSMC capacity or Nv? Hahaha...

grats on having no experience with the 8800gt, it doesnt need to occupy 2 slots for cooling since its running on much cooler 65nm. I OCed by bros 8800gt from 600 core to 670 core for 70C on load and its still cooler than my 8800GTX thats 575 core OCed to 625 core for 79C on load. And his case doesnt cool as good as mine. I can probably OC the 8800GT even more with that temperature difference.

Got a 8800GT, run Crysis demo at 35 on very high, don't care about ATi anymore everything is made for NV. ATi is struggling to do anything with these HD's, they are cute on paper but are weak in performance. NV stated that they had more than 150,000 for this quarter before they released it. They are doing weekly waves and they are back ordered, it happens for a while after a big release. Check your easy to find stats before making them up.

last time i heard: the GTS wasnt new, its the GT that is faster cheaper and newer.

Last time i heard: DX10.1 was a technical revision from the software side only. In other words a reworking of the framework of what was previously optional in code is now mandatory. IE no change to graphics compatibility.

DX10.1 stand to benefit (on paper at least) ATI quite a lot. It allows better/faster shader AA, which is what killed the 2900xt.

personally, i'm gonna wait till January when dx10.2 and sp1 are out for vista, and decide what card to buy then. based on benchmarks and performance:price ratio. (not based on emotional fanboy 5h!t)

First review I've seen thus far.
Not looking good for ATI...on average it is a whopping 22% slower.

1) Nvidia 8800 GT isn't DX 10.1 fully compatible;
2) ATI 3870 is cheaper than 8800 GT and it integrates newer technologies wich I think will do better in the near future.
3) AMD deserves to be a winner. It is fighting on two fronts: NVIDIA and INTEL
4) In the end I'm satisfied with a resolution of 1600X1200 and 30 fps. The question is: are you? :)

1) I'm sure the number of Vista gamers with DX10.1 cards is pretty low. Not much incentive for developers to add that support just yet. And looking at the Source engine, DX9 is capable of so much more.

2) Newer technology isn't always better *cough * AMD's 4X4.

3) The company with the better product deserves to be the winner, regardless of how many fronts it's fighting on. The consumer shouldn't suffer because a company bites off more than it can chew.

I just wanted to remind you all that having DX10.1 card is important. Because some of those new DX 10.1 features can be accessed through the old DX 9 software.

Read the videocard section of maximum pc holiday 2007 mag. The quotes from Doug Lmbardi of valve stem.

The unified architecture in the DX10 class cards offers more than the DX10 API for most developers.

The new shader offers a lot as well. I'm not getting vista, I'm holding out for vienna/windows7 in 2009.

By that time dx 10.1 (or possibly 10.2) will be in full swing. The road map for dx 10.2 doesn't call for a hardware change and that's why DX 10.1 compliance is important.

Despite the press clippings (primarily so that current product is purchased, because they love sheep) DX 10.1 changes are huge and offer a lot of flexibility, more realism and speed. The speed boost itself is said to be worth a 25% increase or more depending if you game at the high resolutions.

I hope this helps, because I'm tired of reading people say DX 10.1 is nothing but making optional things to be mandatory. It offers corrections and enhancements to the flawed initial direction of DX 10.

That's why for the first time ever with DX10 a HARDWARE change is required for the same DX class card. And it's being pushed in its DX10 infancy before games are really created utilizing full DX 10. The majority of the DX 10 games are basically DX 9 ports and offer a marginal visual difference between the two. However later that will change.

Had microfluff not switched and pulled the DX10 to boost vista scam. More developers would have been on board as initially reported.

:) I stand enlightened. Thanks! Now if only MS would admit that they f#cked up with Fista, and build a SP for XP that adds DX10 support I'd be happy. MS even admitted that it could be done.

And of course, let's also hope that DX10.2 is only a software update, and doesn't require more new hardware.
