New York (NY) – Thousand of hungry people are being fed thanks to a new vocabulary building website that donates rice for each new word you learn.  The freerice.com website has been operating since October 7th and is now donating more than 100 million grains of rice a day.  In one month, the banner ad funded site has donated more than a billion grains of rice.

Site visitors must match up a word with one of four definitions and every successful guess donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.  The rice is donated thanks to money earned by three banner ads along the bottom of the webpage.  On our visit, we saw ads from big name companies like Radisson, Apple iTunes and American Express.
