Just like the Startec phone of yesteryear, the iPhone is nothing more than a marketing device. It offers a whole lot of nothing and a little bit of something.

I am neither for the iPhone or against it. Some people require thier music collection on them at all times and others like having two devices that do their separate tasks.

I understand what you mean, but it depends on the nature of the problem and "counter-measurements" taken. It's not a "solution" to the problem since there might not even be a problem in the first place.

If they believe that RF "might have a chance" to interfere your brain's functionality, the counter-measurement could be (and not limited to) do something that stops RF from leaking out. It can be seen as a precaution, and we always want to prevent rather than risking for the possibility. It's about, are you risking it or not.

Its called marketing FUD. There is just enough information out to create enough of a concern that some folks will spend money just to be on the safe side.

Thats really all an iphone is, really pleasing, lacking ability. Sprint and Nokia both off phones that do everything the iphones do and are not limited to its proprietary design.

You CAN replace the battery in your iPhone if it dies, it's just not as easy as other phones since it has an integrated battery. You either have to take it to Apple, go to a third party, or spend the afternoon doing it yourself. I hate it when people say you can't replace the battery. It's just not as easy as with most other phones.

Replacing the battery yourself voids the warranty. If anybody except Apple opens the case of that phone the warranty is void. This is why people say the battery can't be replaced because to do so kills the warranty.

You can't do it yourself without disassembling practically the entire phone (and voiding the warranty in the process). Or to put it a better way, the manufacturer does not officially permit replacing the battery yourself, and thus the iphone's batters is not user-replaceable.

By the same token, you also can't use the phone on any provider other than AT&T, nor can you install third-party application on it without Apple's say-so. It's a pretty fascist device, all things considered. But I guess some people like it that way.

The iphone is crap, end of story. Down with Apple, too.

Because there is a potential problem. You are holding an RF transmitter to your head. Same thing as a television transmitter but at lower power. If you went up a TV tower with the transmitter on, it'd cook you like a microwave. With a phone, the power is lower and the frequency is higher. The concern was the long term effects of what that RF signal does to your brain cells. It was more of a prominent problem with the old analog phones because they had to use higher wattage to get the signal out, but still, even with todays phones you are bombarding your brain with low-wattage, high frequency RF waves and they're not certain what the long term effects of that is. Its like a slow cooker (which is also why I use a wired earpiece as opposed to bluetooth).

And farting could cause a nuclear explosion.

Ok - reality check!! There is a SAR recommended radiation exposure limit with no direct link to any health issue. Secondly, I would love to see properly conducted tests in an anechoic chamber that prove that these little battery replacements actually DO anything. Adding a circuit to a battery can hardly counteract the radiation emminating from a phone antenna. Aside from that, the radiation is carrying the phone signal, so if you interfere with or counter-act that in any way, you wouldn't have a phone call!! DOH!!

This sounds as effective as an aluminum beanie cap. ROFLOL.

On side note: I plan on buying an iPhone - does this make me an idiot? Am I brainless - I think not. It has a feature set that works, and works well. I defy you to find any other handheld device on the market that does what this one does as well or as easily, and I have owned a windows mobile device. Hated it, it was just too @#!$@#$ obtuse to use. Media player was a joke, forget about video, and the phone was only average. The thing about the iPhone is that it just works - plain and simple. It is easy to use, and I like that. Additionally, to call someone 'stupid' or 'brainless' for making an informed consumer choice only serves to graphically illustrate the level of ignorant behavior that is rampant online these days. (*sigh* My kingdom for an intelligent comment!!)

As for those who complain about not being able to change from AT&T, big deal (what didn't you understand about the clear statement that **THIS PHONE ONLY WORKS ON AT&T**). . . EVERY network has at least one phone that works only on their network, and I guarantee that any phone that has been sim-unlocked will not have a complete feature set on the non-native carrier. Would it be nice to use another carrier, maybe, but they've all got their issues. Aside from that, each provider has such vastly different network architectures, features and requirements (CDMA, GSM. . etc.) that making "one phone to rule them all" is simply not practical.

As for proprietary or third party software, ever try to find software for a verizon phone that's not windows mobile or verizon-approved (what do you think verizon's get-it-now is?)? NON-EXISTANT. In fact, the only mobile phones with third party software that doesn't have to pass the carrier stamp of approval is windows and palm, and half the time those apps are so poorly written that they crash your phone.

Hallelujah that someone should require some accountability for software developed for their platform. Fact is, apple has opened the platform and we will shortly see many applications for an iphone.

As for the battery - well, unless you got a lemon (which is what warranties are for) the battery will certainly outlive the warranty, so I don't mind opening it myself or sending it to a service shop to be replaced. By the time my battery dies, my warranty will long be over. The iPod mini battery was supposedly non-replaceable but it took me about 15 minutes to do mine.

BTW, I own a PC, don't particularly care for M$ and am not an apple fanatic (I own one iPod - and enjoy it very much thank you!)

Remember the whole Y2K thing, people made millions off scaring companies and individuals into thinking the world would end if you didn't buy my product or service.

I remember seeing an infomercial late at night once a bit over 5 years ago, about this "strip" you put over the back of your cell phone to shield you from harmful radiation. I remember they showed a diagram, not of it affecting your brain, but you TESTICLES!!

That's right, they advertised that the radiation progressively traveled down your body and made you eventually infertile.

Hm, i mean, i beleive that holding these radio devices up to our heads for prolonged periods over time may do something bad, but

A)almost everything causes cancer these days, not using a cell phone doesnt seem to do much good

B)If the stuff cell phones emit are harmful when you think about it there's already plenty of irradiating stuff going through the air through us every day

C)I still dont get why regular cordless phones and the RF they emit are any better then

honestly, i think as cell phones get smaller the problem pgoressively gets better anyway, just as the highly irradiating tube tv's eventually transist to LCD's and the such that are less harmful on us, as will shrinking cell and battery technology, i do hope that it's already ok and the cumulative effect is null now though....

I worked on Y2K issues for a mission critical application. I can guarantee that, had we not performed that work, that app would have crashed, leaving the the entire organization to twiddle it's thumbs while the fix was done after the fact.

Given that the 'fixing' took months, it was far better that we performed that work ahead of time.

So Y2K was real. The only reason it wasn't the predicted disaster was diligent work performed by folk like me. And I didn't make millions. I worked unpaid overtime to get it done, and as a result I'm just a tad sensitive to people calling my and my peoples work a scam.

Air is a fluid. Fluids are not necessarily Liquids. It's more of a scientific distinction than anything else. Think of it in terms of drag and it makes mroe sense. A plane has drag on it. Put it in water and it has a lot more drag. Both fluids just with different viscosities. It was news to me when I first learned about it in college. But never the less "oh really?" is correct.

Radio waves are non ionizing. They are also long wave. They don't break up atoms. They do not cause chemical changes (unless you pump so many of them into you that your brain starts to boil). The plastic in your iPhone is far more likely to cause cancer than the radio waves.

Cell phones do not cause cancer (unless you eat them). Power lines do not cause cancer (Eating live high voltage power lines is not recommended). Your microwave can cause cancer, but only if you use it to cook the wrong kinds of food (Your microwave can also make you fat).

Drinking alcohol can kill your liver, but I still do it.

Gues you dont have experience with production systems. Simple winter change of time can make some software (for example databases) going to totaly mess and thats reason why big companies for example shutdown servers for hour to prevent coruption of data whitch could be few days nightmare to fix.
And Y2K had posibily make much much more mess.

If you spend the money for an iphone you should get the extended Applecare warranty. It covers the battery replacement for 2 years. After that, replacing the battery yourself violates nothing and it is no great challenge. You hear this kind of anti-apple rumor being spread all the time. Its just more "net-lore." Wise people will recognize it for what it is. When the other manufacturers catch up with the iphone, this "lore" will disappear.
