Wal-Mart has jumped on the HD-DVD wagon with selling the super cheap $99 HD-DVD player. Sellling over 90,000 player already. With HD-DVD having cheaper players and larger space(51GB) I would have to say they have won. Now it's just time before Blu-Ray dies off like Betamax

Millions of PS3s in the wild and they only manage 130k. DVD is still king. HD formats are such a small fraction of sales.

How many DVDs were sold and how many of the BD sales were actually HD-DVD sold outside Region 1?

I'm not against BD, but I think they inflate the numbers and I get sick of this "we are only doing this in one format." thing. They actual have several formats, DVD Full Screen, DVD Wide Screen, 2-Disc sets, VHS, etc. Report on everything so we can see that HD is just hype right now.

This title seems to be a little bit of wishful thinking since there is no mention of Transformers first week sales at 190,000.

At least they didn't include the free-bee Spiderman 3 that they gave away with the PS3.

For Region 1 it is going to be a dual format HD-DVD and Blue-Ray drive for a long time. Just concede to the fact that if you want to be able to rent/buy all movies - ya gotta buy one.

WTF, $45.00? Was that a typo? $45.00 for Spiderman 3??? Spiderman 3??? I still want my money back from seeing that POS of a movie. I was thinking about getting all three on Bluray just to round out the trilogy, but $45.00? This is why HD will struggle to catch on with the general public. The HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs are priced way too high.

It depends on where you bought it from. Best buy was selling a copy of something like $43 which included a $10 gift card, a $5 dollar something....and some other worthless materials.

Overall, its a good week for the movie. I actually picked it up when I was out looking for the $99 deal this past week. At the end of the day, like it has been said before, these Blu-ray and HD DVD sales are only a small portion of the overall market. I would say it is good for PS3, but with so many owners of Blu-ray, you would think sales would have been higher, but then too it just may not be a good movie. I have to take a look at it this weekend and see.

Well said richard, I have the HD DVD player for my 360 and I haven't bought any movies yet (except for the free ones that came with it) because they are rediculously priced.

I can't remember exactly where but spider man 3 was bundled with a blu-ray player or something else. Every time that bundle was sold also counts towards a spider man 3 sale, my the point being is not that many people actually paid $45 for the movie.

No point really to getting the trilogy pack; apparently they really botched Spider-Man 1 & 2, and didn't even include the special features from either.

$15 a month here, $20 more for a movie there, $1000 bucks for tv over there. The truth is that only about of the population really cares about HD content and until prices come down it will probably stay that way. I just wish the would stop nickel and diming us for content.

Another thing I don't care which HD format wins I just hope this is the last time Sony tries to push a competing media format for everything that comes to market. It just creates confusion. Maybe they should innovate be the first to market with their idea and stop trying to push out everyone else's formats.

No the $45 MSRP is not a typo. This is the suggested retail price for, pretty much all HD movies. It doesn't matter which camp. The fact of the matter is, no store, at least around here that is, will sell them for that much. Granted, all the Blu-Ray titles here in Kansas City are $5-10 more expensive that HD-DVD discs, they are all still in the 18.95-34.95 price range. If you look at the MSRP listed on sites like Amazon, you'll see that the MSRP is very high for HD titles, anywhere from 44.95 all the way up to 59.95, for just a single movie! And if you want a sticker shock, look at close encounters of the third kind for Blu-Ray. Talk about overpriced.

Blur-Ray was announced before HD-DVD..so HD-DVD is actually the competing product.

Did you even read the article EZG? The so called bundled bluray player you speak of is the 40gig PS3, anybody who actually has logged on to this site more than once knows that and it says right in this article that these sales are not included in the number.


And RE: biased title, the title is perfect, the article is about sony pictures beating its own record, (casino royale) the title was not, "sony sets record for all HD sales", idiot. The reason transformers sold so many movies is it is one of the best movies ever, why do you think HD DVD paid paramount 150 million to go exclusive right before that movie came out; they new it would create numbers, if it came out of bluray too it would have probably sold 300,000 copies or more first week because it was that good and blurays outsell HD DVD on dual format movies like 300. Spiderman 3 only sold 130,000 copies because it was a horrible movie and 130,000 people said " hey i might as well round off the trilogy even though it sucked and I might as well pay the extra 10-20 dollars and get it in HD since I have enough money too cuz I could afford to have a bluray player and hd tv so I might as well enjoy them to the fullest." Next time think about it, if transformers went bluray exclusive and spiderman 3 was hd dvd exclusive transformers would of killed it in sales except the difference in sales would have been over 200,000 and not just 60,000.

All you poor kids go finish college and make some money. Then you can afford the HD or blue ray disc instead of reading about it.

Most HD DVD's run between 24.99 and 34.99 unless you're buying like the matrix trilogy (79.99) or a season of hero's etc. Considering you're gunna pay 20 bucks for a new DVD, transformers at $29 isn't as horrendously as expensive as y'all make it out to be. Granted the blu-ray's run 5-10 bucks more in general, but thats cause its harder to code a blu-ray disk...and sony hasta get their cut.

As for Tv's being to expensive, take advantage of 0% financing, most major retailers offer it for extended periods of time. 1440p tv's come out next year, and even though it'll be 10 years or more before there is anything that can push that signal, it'll keep prices up, so just get used to that.
