San Diego (CA) - Toshiba has gone on record as saying that budget retail chain Kmart will not stock standalone Blu-ray players, opting instead to go for less expensive HD DVD devices.
In an interview with trade publication Home Media magazine, Toshiba spokesperson Jody Sally said the general merchandise retail chain will exclusively stock Toshiba HD DVD players. It will be the store's first major foray into the next-generation DVD market.
Kmart will of course continue to sell the Playstation 3, which includes a Blu-ray player, but its marketing of high-def discs will be focused specifically on HD DVD.
Initially, the store will only stock the Toshiba HD-A2 player, the lowest-priced next-gen DVD player available. The MSRP is around $300, but competing discount chain Wal-Mart has already begun selling it for just under $200. Kmart has not set a price on the unit yet. A Kmart representative told us the store was not ready to make an official announcement.
This puts retail competition at the forefront of the HD disc war this holiday season. Target has announced it will only stock Blu-ray Disc players, and Blockbuster's in-store collection will not include HD DVD. However, Toshiba will have the biggest presence for budgeted consumers, with the Kmart exclusivity and the discounted player at Wal-Mart.
The least expensive Blu-ray Disc player will be the Playstation 3, with the new lower-capacity $400 model. Standalone Blu-ray players will start at around $500 going into the next month and a half.
