I think AMD has a strong hold on it's future with a strong product lineup. The only luck they need is making their delivery dates.

Intel is bigger, better, smarter and more innovative than AMD, and all AMD did by trumping them for a year and a half was bring the beast out of its cage, and the only way to get themselves out of the rut they've dragged themselves into is to sue Intel until they are blue in the face. Oh wait. haha, Intel already is blue in the face. Now what?

I hope they can make a good comeback cause they are falling behind really fast. I doubt that they will ever be on par in a generation again because of their size, but we need AMD so that intel keeps those wicked overclockers coming.

if amd can survive this and launch fusion early, they might have another run like they did with the athlon.

we are rooting for you amd, but i had to buy an intel laptop to get my nvidia quadro 360m for gpgpu hacking.

if anyone is listening, my next OS is ubuntu, so if AMD shows up strong with ubuntu i will be a happy camper, for now i am stuck on windows xp.

True that. I switched to Core 2 because its the better product out right now. I can't justify spending $200 for a X2 6400 that runs hot, performs slower, and uses more power than (insert C2D product here).

ATI still seems to be putting the drag on AMD recovery. ATI needs to pull some more weight with its products.
All in all, a decent recovery considering all the pressure on AMD .What is interesting is that they gained 8% on gross.
Hopefully they can cut losses to even less in this quarter. Going to be tough with Intel's new offerings but hopefully they can produce products to keep people interested.
I look forward to Q2 next year. That will be a better gauge of how AMD is progressing financially.

And once AMD goes under and Intel has no competition, what makes you think they will continue to deliver a quality product at a fair price?

The second Intel is alone in the market that beast will retreat to its cage and deliver another overheating pentium 4 at a ridiculous price.

Competition is good in ANY market no matter which company you favor.

BTW Wolfgang the operating loss in Q2 was $457 million. The net loss was something like $600 million.

I'm CPU agnostic and just want the biggest bang for my buck. But if AMD closes shop then that is bad for everyone. Tonga say competition good monopoly bad.

at that price range.... 200$ intel is FAR AHEAD...
but under that... i doubt it... look at the cpu charts, price performance.. amd is the thing to buy....!!!

at my job i was installing comp..
we had 2 comps(both dell optiplex btx),

intel e4200( or something i dont remember wich one...) with a HUGE heat sink

and a amd 4600 , with a small heat sink

and guess wich one had more heat... at idle
to my suprise... with a good difference it was intel...

Intel are no WAY more innovative than Intel, they have a small percentage of Intels finanace and yet still have a good market share.
As for 3DFX, they were brilliant and glide is was AMAZING back then (such a shame Nvidia couldnt/wouldnt acquire the license)

Yet another loss. This will probably be true even into early 2008. I don't see AMD just magically jumping back after the hard hits they have had.

LORD IRISH, I have said it once and I will say it again so far native quad core doesn't do anything much better than what Intels quad cores can do. So unless AMD was holding out their chips will be /- to Intels not better not worse.

tobago, I don't blame ATI. I blame AMD for that. ATI has been gutted literaly to the point where their major focus is not on the high end GPU market like they used to be. Instead AMD is using ATI for their own onboard video and Fusion.

But ATI is catching up to NVidia in performance very fast. The last drivers, 7.10, put my HD2900Pro 1GB GDDR4 card ahead of a 8800GTS 640 by 3k in 3DMark05. I compared this to the same system(i.e. CPU, memory, OS even against XP where as I have Vista). So ATI will start to sell since the drivers seem to be maturing nicely.

As for AMD, unless the Phenom is a Conroe/Penryn killer, which it isn't so far, AMD will probably just make even.

I hope AMD survives to keep Intel reasonable, but they are 2nd tier for the forseable future.

There have been articles on whether this has just been a bump in the road for AMD because of the merger, or a more long term slump that AMD will never recover from. I see this as strong evidence of the former. Lowering their net loss from $600 million to $396 million in one quarter is impressive. They aren't out of the hole yet but they are well on their way.

When X86 goes down, Intel will have plenty of competition from the likes of Toshiba and IBM, certainly among others. X86 is a terrible set of CPU instructions and there were many better ones back in the day when it took over, not to mention 24 years later. I'm looking forward to a time when Windows goes down and an OS crops up that doesn't rely on the dinosaur set of CPU instructions known as X86. I don't, in any scenario, see AMD as a part of this future. Unfortunately for them, they've made one too many stupid decisions. The enthusiast market might drive CPU innovation, but it doesn't rake in the bucks.

I agree with you Jimmy. I don't blame ATI either. The drag I was referring to was the continuing cost to AMD to finalize the ATI acquisition. This has hurt both companies. However this should change soon. I agree a resurgence is afoot for ATI. Driver 7.10 is a good start.

Speaking of decisions, Intel, in all its uncaged glory, has started to make some good ones. Intel is SCREWING AMD with this price war, and AMD simply doesn't have an answer to it. Intel's posting profit, and AMD is posting loss. Intel smartly is hitting AMD where it counts and there's nothing they can do about it. Yay for Barcelona, AMD's native quad-core thingy. It's too little, too late. It won't beat Penryn on price (even if it comes close with performance) and it won't beat Nahalem at all. Intel is thinking way (way) into the future now. We aren't hearing only about the next product that's coming. We're hearing about the next four generations of products that are coming, and that's only the public part of it. Intel isn't going to lose this fight.

I still think it's funny that AMD hasn't even learned the temperature control lessons of the K6 days. I recently read an article right here on Tom's Hardware about AMD chips' lack of performance if the CPU fan dies. At least they crash instead of starting on fire, but I expect more these days. I expect to still be able to shut down my computer gracefully. If AMD can't handle a problem as simple as that, I don't trust them to handle anything... not even my grandmother's e-mail.

They have been worse off. Everything goes in cycles. They'll climb back, then Intel will lose a billion, then they'll climb back and AMD will lose a billion. It's like the energizer bunny, it just keeps going and going and going.

But its all good. It gives us great product at better prices....

Oh wait...Intel is in there too. It is something normal for a system to shutdown if the cpu fan stops working...unless you have a huge heatsink ofcourse. The article did mention that the lower end intel cpu managed not to shut down, which is good, but you can't really bash AMD for something that is normal for processors from both companies.

Cut bait and run? That's the attitude that causes market crashes and why consumer stock trading is SUCH a bad idea - people want a quick buck and panic, then herd to dump stock that isn't performing at that second.

I like both Intel and AMD. AMD is/was *far* more innovative and elegant in their designs (and before you flame me, I'm a Computer Engineer that analyses and builds systems for a living. They forced Intel to back off of the stupid P4 debacle, back to the elegant P3 based core and become more innovative. Every company experiences product farts. Now it's AMD's turn and I seriously hope their new products kick serious butt so that Intel has to respond.

I use Intel C2D at home on my personal computer and gaming rig. There is no way I'd put Intel into a colo environment (that I pay the cost for power on) - AMD based platforms consistenly deliver the performance I need, at a price that is lower than intel and runs a LOT cooler.

Case in point, I just dropped 15 AMD based opterons into a colo after comparing AMD vs Intel at the performance I needed. AMD cost 30% less, used 20% less power for my workload and disspated 40% less heat - that's a win-win-win *for that environment*

So before either side claims that FOO is better, you should know what your talking about, what the job at hand is and get the facts :)
