Hopefully we'll have a winner by the end of this holiday season. However, I have a feeling it will be at least another year. One won't give in after just one good holiday season. The numbers aren't high enough. If they were selling 20 million to a week it might be a different story. Though, even then there probably wouldn't be a concession.

and man do i hope its blu-ray. not b/c im a fanboy--I just hate that stupid hd-dvd commercial with that guy from the sopranoes in it. its absolutely the worst commercial on tv (I can't stand the way he pronounces 'dvd'..deee vuehhh deee). horrible.

Just goes to show Paramount has it's head up it's own arse by only allowing a single format.

I have checked the store shelves here the price of hd content is on the rise, new releases in some cases have doubled on certain titles.

I have to agree, even though I believe Blu-ray has already won because of the same reasons VHS won over Bata. Mainly, greater recording capacity, and overall Manufacturing support. We won't see any really big numbers until next year. However, that doesn’t mean there won't be very strong support for Blu-ray this Christmas, but compared to DVD it won't be a head turner. The numbers after the holiday season will likely show Blu-ray way out in front in overall sales. HD DVD will have a problem finding any really good movies to release after the Holidays as they have already released most of their best titles. Universal and Paramount will need a vary strong showing at the box office next year for HD DVD to have anything to release in 2008. It's not likely Paramount will stay exclusive to HD DVD beyond next summer as any hope for the format will have waned away by then.

It's the PS3. IT'S THE PS3. Plain and simple. The PS3 has sold 3-5 million machines worldwide (and it looks like a $400 version may be available soon) by now. If 5% of those people buy a Blu-Ray movie each month, then of course it the Blu discs will outsell HD-DVD discs. (A Four-to-One (4:1) edge is pretty sad, considering.)

The reported sales lead has NOTHING to do with Blu-Ray's storage capacity (i.e. 20 GB of empty space). I've only come across a handful of movies that offered lossless PCM. Pop in the same title (HD-DVD and Blu-RAY) and tell me which is which (sight & sound)...

after switching of some companies to HD DVD, we are only at the beginning :)
I do not a winner, I need cheap combo player, so as most of the people, people who desperately hope to see a winner in the near future - owners of pricey PS3, though it's not gonna happen :) too much money at stake

Blu-ray has 200 titles out now with lossless audio (PCM, TrueHD, or DTS HDMA) making up 57% (88% if you remove the neutral studio titles). HD DVD only has 57 titles making up just 17%.

I'll bet that edge gets down to 1.4-to-1, after this holiday season. Toshiba might be planning a serious offensive in sales for the holiday.
