Foster City (CA) - Sony has given more details about its ambitious Playstation Eye, the spiritual successor to the PS2's novelty EyeToy.

In the official Playstation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment producer Sarah Stocker gave additional info about the elusive PS3 camera peripheral.

According to Stocker, the Playstation Eye will have a two-setting zoom lens for normal and wide angle, and will have automatic focus.  Additionally, it will be able to capture pictures at 60 frames per second with 640x480 resolution.



Like the EyeToy, it will also include a microphone and can be used for audio/video messaging.  The EyeToy was mainly limited to minor interactions and basic control functions fo casual games, such as in the EyeToy: Play mini-game compilations or Dance Dance Revolution.

Sony plans to use the Eye in more professional applications as well, such as video recording and editing software for the PS3.  Stocker said it will also be incorporated in games like Singstar and Eye of Judgment, as well as downloadable Playstation Network games that are in the pipeline.

Though used as an eye-catcher in Sony's 2006 E3 press conference, the company made no reference to the Eye at all during this year's E3.  Accordingly, little info has been deluged, despite the fact that it is slated for a launch less than two weeks away on October 23.

The Playstation Eye will carry a retail price of around $40.

I got a new PS3 last month and it does so much, and the games are excellent. Last week I found out it plays Blu-ray movies, so me and some friends watched Bram Stockers Dracula, and we were just blown away. Now this awesome PS3 EYE! It just keeps getting better. I can’t wait to get the new WIFI rumble pad next week too. Thanks Sony!

Gotta love the PS3 users who are cracking jokes at the Wii users because when they play games it sometimes involves waving their hands around. Because having to flip your SIXAXIS upside down while playing games like Lair didn't fully require you to get up and look like a fool, now we have another EyeToy to fill in the gap. From a technical standpoint, I find the EyeToy a little odd. The Wii Remote uses a 1-megapixel camera for 480p screens, and the EyeToy has 640x480 (.31-megapixels) for screens intended to be up to 1080p. That means the Wii Remote's camera has over 3 times the resolution of the display, whereas the EyeToy has less than 1/6th of the resolution of the display. I know from experience that, with the Wii, you can definitely shift the pointer by just a single pixel if you have a steady enough hand--will this sort of accuracy be possible on the PS3? With 1/18th the sensor resolution per display pixel, I'd think it wouldn't be able to detect fine movement and details nearly as well as the Wii. Then again, perhaps the different types of use of the different sensors make it a non-issue. So don't quote me on this, I'm just wondering if the EyeToy's resolution will be high enough to accomplish what a (also $40 and much more feature-laden) Wii Remote can do.

First of all PS3 is crap compared to a 360. Second the 360 already has a camera feature and a add on HD player. Don't waste you money on a PS3. More games on 360, more features (xbox live), and cheaper.

Sort of Disappointing

This is sort of disappointing to tell you the truth. My Cellphone camera which was an after thought can do 1024x1280. I though the camera would have variable zoom and do up to 1920x1080 or at least 720p equivalent. This the $40 price tag wasn't really valid even back in 2000 when I got my Logitech Quickcam.

Even if the Wii has a high resoulation on its remote camera, it's still a pice of crap. Those remotes are horrible at measuring movement. Why do you think that system costs so much less? Cheap components and basic graphics. It will never match up with PS3 or Xbox360!
