It is nice to have a system Sony is updating to not worry about issues with different types of media. I feel for the morons who are paying $1000 for a BDR player. When a $499 PS3 is available with updates.

Didn't TDK come out with a 200 Gig Disc?

When will the burner cost < $400?
When will the media cost < $0.50 per gig?
Then I can start looking at this very seriously.

Anyway, a 100gig disk looks like a great data solution. I don't think BluRay player will ever use more than 50 gigs.

The drive is compatible with the current gen. They made modifications to gain more capacity. Do you expect hardware to improve without anybody making any changes? Been watching too much Transformers lately?

this should bring the debate to why blue ray is better then hddvd. Simple, storage space.

you might be angry, but lets say you never need to update your firmware on your hddvd player, but in the end you are still limited to a maximum capacity on your hddvd to 50GB (i think).

So complain all you like that the maximum capacity on the opposing standard is "difficult because of a update neccessary of existing players", but in the end you are just angry that blueray is still higher capacity.

I can't see the average person using this so much, but as an independent filmmaker, I dream for the day that this becomes inexpensive and mass-produced. When you buy movies, you are buying them in a compressed and bitrate-optimized form. Those of us who store and edit raw video need much more space (a 90 minute 1080p movie can easily take up 100GB). Hard Drives aren't reliable enough to depend on because of the failure rate, and tape drives...well, let's just say that the 1970s ended a long time ago.

@Narg: "Slightly modified" only refers to the firmware which controls the focal lenght of the lazer. The lens that focuses the beam for different depths floats over a set of magnetic coils. The amount of voltage applied determines the height of the lens. A firmware update should be able to add that functionality on any manchine not engineered in China.

I can't see MPAA movies using that much space (until 3D movies make it into homes, or if filmmakers want to include an "edit your own movie" interactive function), not unless Peter Jackson desides to release the LOTR trilogy on one disc, or if he decides to release the 6-hour versions. Beyond that, the defect rate increases exponentially for every layer that you add. That's why I don't think we'll ever see 3-layer HD-DVD discs in high volume. The same problem has been plaguing Warner's TotalHD discs. There are just too many layers on the discs. I expect somebody to invent a better glue eventually, though, so anything can happen.

I have used DVDRAM... it is well supported on Linux, and so far to the best of my knowledge, Microsoft did not keep its promises to support it on XP/Vista.

Would anyone know if there are either plans or alredy existing BlueRay based/Compatible DVD-RAM?

Note: A DVD-RAM allows file read/write vey much like a magnetic hard disk. But the write is slower! It is (so far) like using a 5GB floppy drive.

some of you are just as childish as the xbox ps3 groupies who spend hours knocking the other system and giving bad reviews because you invested in the competitor. people with non biased informed reviews keep up the good work

Big deal. Blu-Ray still is not a good format for movies. Some Blu-Ray players only support converting Dolby TrueHD audio to 48KHz PCM even if the original master was recorded at 96KHz (Sharp's USA Blu-Ray player comes to mind but I'm sure there are others). Also, while first generation HD-DVD players fully support HDi, a significant amount of Blu-Ray players have either no support or very limited support for Java meaning no interactivity features.

Who the hell wants inateractivity and Java on their players ? Do you want studios to invalidate your player or discs because of what somebody else has done ?
And who ever goes through all the extra crap on dics now?
Give me space lots of it.. Put all series of shows on the one disc so I can save space.
And stop developing useless bloody things like interactive menus etc...

raid is not back up? you read any other articles on toms hardware? alot of people use raid solely for backup(mirroring) and others for speed (stripping) and some people use both??

id like to get 2 units side by side and get you to tell me which one is hddvd and which is bluray just by listening.
even if there is a reasonable difference your gunna need some good audio equipment to take advantage of that sound.
u can keep ur interactive rubbish, meanwhile i can use my bluray player(PS3) to surf the net and find my own interactive content thats actually worth watching.
Meanwhile,back on topic this is article is more poised towards data backup and 100gig per disc is very reasonable and a firmware upgrade leaves almost no one out. show me the same hd-dvd

I tried using it to look at a few pages, just to try it out, but it's much easy to view on the PC. The picture/text doesn't look right.

The real killer was that whenever I clicked on a media link, I got a "system out of memory" error after 10-20 seconds of waiting.

I agree about being able to tell a difference regarding the sound quality. However, blu-ray lovers will tout 5.1/7.1 lossless PCM, as if they and other can tell the difference. How many people really have a (good) 7.1 system and use the left & right surround speakers? How many people can tell the difference between a Dolby/DTS 5.1/7.1 and lossless PCM or TrueHD? DVD-quality audio & HD-DVD/Blu-Ray quality?

To me, as far as movies go, it doesn't make a difference. Blu-Ray or HD-DVD both get the job done. My personal preference is HD-DVD simply because I don't think it's in our best interest for SONY to "win" in this case. I rent both formats (HD-DVD over Blu-Ray when both are available, of course), but I mainly purchase only HD-DVD (10 vs. 3).

As for data storage capacity, if you need that much space, there will always be multiple solutions. Most likely, there are newer solutions already in the pipe. It's been a year since the "announcements" of 45GB/51GB HD-DVD discs and 200GB (and now 100GB) Blu-Ray discs, none of which have seen the light of day.

i dont make a habbit of using the ms3 to surf the net as i do have 2 computers on the same network but im just saying im more likely to use that than miss the extra web content on hd-dvd.ive had no problems with the ps3 web browser, surfed utube heaps,downloaded songs and pics fine only problem is i couldnt stream net radio...

sure theres many other ways to back up your data but having a "one stop shop" with blueray for data and movies would make things a little less complicated, 1 drive, 1 format, less problems?

i dont see a problem with bluray winning, you gotta remember its not just sony backing it and i dont think they will be out for world domination on this one

I agree that in most cases there is no difference in audio quality between lossless PCM and Dolby TrueHD. The only exception to this is if you are comparing 16-bit 48KHz lossless PCM to 24-bit 96KHz Dolby TrueHD audio. It's almost like comparing a CD to a properly done DVD-Audio disc. There is a BIG difference in this case.

about that whole picture/text not looking right thing, do you have an HDTV? I would assume you do, seeing as having a ps3 without an HDTV is like, well, I can't think of any real examples, but the point is, if you don't have HDTV and you try to look at stuff on the internet, it'll look like absolute rubbish due to (from what I can infer) the difference in resolution. My friend has that problem with the internet browser on the Wii unless he zooms in a decent bit. And on 100gb disks, MGS4 is gonna need it, they couldn't fit the whole game on the 50gb formatted disks and had to start downsizing it, so the space is necessary, especially with the PS3 and it's insane, well, everything(short of online play, xbox still holds that trophy, for now).
