Chicago (IL) - Midway has announced that Unreal Tournament 3, originally set to be its killer PS3 app for the holiday season, may not make it out this year after all.

According to newly revised release windows from Midway, Unreal Tournament 3 has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2008.  This would be a blow for the game, which was crucial both for the publisher, and for the PS3 format as a whole.

Midway CEO David Zucker wrote, "While we regret that these delays will cause us to lose some valuable holiday sales in the near term as well as shift revenue for some of these titles out of 2007 and into 2008, we remain confident that our technology strategy and product plan position us to grow both revenue and market share as we move into the heart of this console cycle."

However, the game's developer, Epic, said the game may still come out this year and that Midway's announcement is not official.  "As a public company, Midway felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay," said Epic's Mark Rein on the company's official message board.  "Our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007.  However, we will only ship it once its ready and is the best game we can deliver."

The PS3 is a beast that isn't handled easily. There's a lot of game that are delayed because it's just not an easy platform to work with.

The same thing happened with UT2003. The release was delayed many times, but it was worth it because they released a great product from the start. If they need more time to get the bugs out, so be it. (M$, take notes!)

They're delaying the PS3 version later than the PC version so that if anything needs to be fixed/patched quickly they can do it and also alter the PS3 build. This way they don't have to go through that timely "certification" process for each patch on the consoles.

All the PS3 guys blasted Microsoft when it was announced that UT3 for the 360 was not going to appear at the same time as the PS3 version. Might not be the case anymore.

Cross platform Mods

One really cool thing is that Epic is supporting PC mods being ported to the PS3 and XBox versions. This may even help drive sales of the console versions - since they will have the added value of playing the Mods the PC players build in addition to the UT3 game!

thanks for the delay actually now i have more time to play with Quake wars: Enemy Territory. But when U3 comes out bug free and well polish i'll buy it so no biggie to me :)

Ahhh, reassuring comments below say PC is still slated for November. I am happy. U2 was the cultivation of my gameing life, the only satisfying shooter among rpgs.
