They can't meet demand because they obviously don't want to. There is no money in meeting demand for them ^_^. Long term people -long term!

That Nintendo is committed to a quality product and won't sacrafice that quality just to sell more units. That's always a good sign.

I (along with everyone else here) basically thought nintendo would be dead last in this race.

They're number 1 by a large margin. Also, with actual margins on the console, they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Then you have Sony, who will probably never make up the $150 they lose on each console in game sales (because there aren't any!).

That is going to be ALOT of lost sales.

Nintendo is still living in disbelief that they have created a success. I can't believe a company of that size and history a YEAR later is still saying "we don't know how to take your money"

Every year some console manufacture uses this tired old marketing gimmick "we just can't make enough of them, so hurry! hurry and get one while you can!"

That's some seriously flawed logic. If Nintendo had the manufacturing and shipping capability to meet demand, they obviously would, because it would mean MORE PROFIT.

Not being able to meet demand will hurt Nintendo long term, as potential Wii buyers will consider the alternatives.

THAT is why they have spent the last year trying to increase production, and inventory, but even doing that I think they will still not be able to meet demand this holiday, just like last holiday and all this year.

Yeah, sort of like you when you waited in line at midnight for your copy of Halo 3. And people buying a 360 just so that they could play it even though the game can be completed in under 20 hours.

Sorry KC... the single player portion of Halo is only a very very very small portion of the HALO3 phenomenon.

Sell that paperweight Sony is trying to market as a movie player / game console and get yourself a XBOX360 and some HALO3. I just went home at work for an hour to play some online HALO3. What a freaking blast!

Actually KC, I don't think you would last 30 seconds in a Sniper /Shotty match. Better go hurry and get yourself a Wii real quick before they sell out for the holiday. Might I suggest some Mario Kart for you?!?!?

Wii is selling to non-gamers. To them, there is no other alternative. My wife for example would love to get a Wii, but Xbox, PS3, they're not the same and not worth the money (to her).

Wii creates an interaction that appeals to the masses. The others appeal to the gamer demographic. Guess which demo is way bigger than the other.

People that want the Wii, will wait for the Wii, they won't buy a PS3 because there are no Wiis on the shelf.

there is bigger sales of the wii system is because of it's demographics. the ps3/360 are only going for hardcore gamers, which is like 20 or less percent. the other 80 percent are regular or casual gamers. that big number is hard for nintendo to fill in because it's a big number [80*1000000=80 million]. what nintendo did is basically got themselves out of the usual race and created their own race and there is no one for them to compete with. nintendo wins and nintendo wins big because each console sold earns nintendo money [they don't loose in systems sales] and developers see's the big console sell and see's big possible earnings to be made.

capcom is releaseing zack and wiki, if 50 percent of the 80 percent bought the game [40percent], that is a huge earning for capcom, what company wouldn't want that.

With new and cheaper models of the PS3 and 360 available this holiday season, Nintendo is poised to blow it. How can Nintendo not be prepared to meet demand for the holidays? They get a pass for last year because it was the console launch, but they have had a full year to prepare.

Why would I pay this much money for older tech? I'm still confounded my the craze over old freaking tech.

Nintendo may want to meet the demand but there are factors none of us are completely certain about, which may be factors:

1) Supplies to make units: What are the suppliers capable of making which meets Nintendo's product requirements? If the supplies to make the units are not manufactured in enough quantities, then it's all Nintendo can do to buy what is available.

2) Costs: Sure Nintendo could throw more money at the manufacturers to make more materials faster, but is it economically realistic, or woud it cost Nintendo more than they care to spend?

3) Avoiding overproduction: By keeping the rate they are at, they are not having over production issues. A smart business practice.

4) Nintendo has not been doing well in console sales for a while before the Wii, whereas the Xbox and Playstation were dominant for a while. Nintendo may be playing it safe for now. A bad move? Perhaps... but it's speculation.

We've all seen that it's a number of years before another game console comes out by the big 3, so the Wii has time to keep making its mark.

They have increased the supply, but it just makes no sense to outsource the production from Nec at great cost for a console that is going to be short lived. If you do that, either you don't recoup the costs or rise the price.. witch is their best selling point.

So they have pressed Nec to increase production, but this is not enough. It is better to lose some sales than to lose a ton of money.

My guess is that in the next couple of years we will get a new wii, 100% compatible with the previous version..
