I think you forgot one update that makes sure your unlocked phone is bricked!

An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.

Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".

Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.

There are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iPhones.

On Monday Apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs caused "irreparable damage" to the device's software.

The company said this would "likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed".

That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.

Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.

Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.

When Apple releases a product that is actually popular people actually try to attack it...? And Apple releases updates that fixes these vulnerabilities...?

I guess we live in a world of double standards as it isn't OK for MS to do this exact same thing. Alright.

It's a little different with hardware Chase. Oh well! Time to short Apple stock. This crosses the line. Deliberately sabotaging phones that shouldn't have been locked to At&T outrageous pricing plan in the first place. I'm assuming At&t was putting pressure on Apple after forking up serious cash to be the sole caterer to yuppie proprietary hardware fanboys.

The fixes are pre-emptive, not in reaction to a widespread attack on the devices. All but one of the fixes to Mobile Safari address issues that deal with the user visiting malicious websites.

Mr. Raby's piece here would lead you to believe that 1.1.1 is all about bug fixes when in fact it also adds quite a few features to the phone. Between this piece and his write-up of the SEC's investigation of a former Apple exec, I'd say it looks like he has a distinct bias against Apple. Don't the readers of this site provide enough anti-Mac/PC content for the TG staff? Stop adding fuel to the fire, TGD.

Apples "patch" will soon be patched by the community, this was just to appease AT&T who I'm sure tried to do a lil arm twisting seeing as how they're forking over so much cash to Apple...but Jobs is smarter than this, he knows the cats out of the bag. And deal with AT&T or not, Apple gets revenue from both locked AND unlocked phones, so guess who comes out smelling like roses no matter what?

There is an article on TGD titled: "Google purchases mobile social networking company". In the last line of the article it says something about Google planning a mobile phone of it's own. Now, seeing what the market has to offer and their condition, I believe a slow and painful death of some MS and Apple.

... the repost is mostly propaganda to discourage people from having their iphones unlocked. It's all software and firmware based so the iphones will only stop working until the hackers come up with their next fix. Obviously, this has become a cat and mouse game. But I doubt the phones are permanently damaged like Apple would like you to believe

I take it from the comments posted that you guys have never programed or modified embedded systems. The key to hacking an embedded system like a cell phone is to first, find the function you want to replace, and then redirect calls to another location.

If your new function is the same size or smaller than the function to be replaced, you can put it in the same space the old function was in. If it is larger, you need to find an unused section of memory.

When a vender like Apple updates an embedded system, they write over the old code with new code. The new code almost always takes up more space. If the new code uses the same space as your modded function, your phone is a brick.

The only way to prevent updates from crashing modded systems is to erase and replace all of the code, not just the changed code. A total erasure and replacement of code will still brick a cell phone that has moved to another mobile company, because the phone will be locked again.

If the code used to reflash the phone gets trashed, the only way to unbrick it is to send the phone back to the factory.
